Why my shaked jars ain't colonizing?
    #9927272 - 03/07/09 08:11 AM (15 years, 1 month ago)

Hi all. Me again.
Got 6 jars total. Shaked 4 of them until today. After the shaking, two of them beginned to colonize very fast. Theyre like %60-80 now. But the others aint colonizing. A few days left (4-5 days) and still theres just very little mycel growing happened on the sides.
What is wrong?
Did I shake them early? Did I shake them so much and harm mycels? Or mycels gone deep inside the kernels so its late?
What may be the reason?
Do you suggest me to shake them again?
Thanks.

IME, you should wait to shake until 50%, or maybe a little more.

They were %20-30 colonized when I shaked. Why the other jars are colonizing as well but the others not. I can't understand this.

that happened with my bulk, one container isn't colonizing.  Give it a couple days and they should start again, otherwise just leave them.  They may not recover, but they probably will.

What temperature are you keeping them at?  If it's too high it can slow it down.

I've also noticed sometimes that jars will stall out after shaking for a bit, but usually they recover after a few days.

You can kill the Myc from shaking it to much and damaging it. but most of the time you just harm it and it has to recover. It shouldn't take to long, i quit shaking for that reason and my jars finish faster. Just let em sit for awhile and see what happens.

You need to allow 48 hours for a grain jar to begin recovering after shaking.  If you shake and it doesn't recover, it means the grains were contaminated, usually by bacteria.

Only shake once at 25% to 50%, and then shake the day you spawn to bulk to break the kernels up so you can pour them out.

I was keeping them at 28-30 centigrades (83-86 Fahrenheit).
Now I made temprature 24-26 centigrades (75-79 Fahrenheit).
I shake them a little bit longer. So I may harm the mycelium.
But there wasn't any contamination symptoms. My mycelium was totally healthy. I checked it carefully.
A little mycelium appeared at jars but it's like I made inoculation and started from zero again.

I shaked my jars at both the 25% mark and at 60-75%. One jar of 5 was a dud, turned out that my brother shook the jar the day before I did and it was inoculated only 3 days before that, the verdict was: it wes too soon and too much.

Yes, your jar will have to recover after being shaken, just like ripping a root from a tree prioritizes a tree to repair before continuing on.

I would say don't shake the jars vigorously, think of it as simply breaking the hard chunks that forms from being left alone to grow for a couple of days. You want to maximize growing potential by maximizing surface area of growth in the jar, what you don't want is to shake them until each part is separated down to the grain or in such small fragments.

Just my opinion

the ones that aren't working, set them aside for a couple weeks and they might start up.

Yeah i learn my lesson, you mustn't shake hard. I think the probably reason is this for this delay.
Otherwise I didn't see a contam sign.
So what do you suggest me at this situation?

Incorrect.

I shake by banging the jars very hard against a tire or phone book.  Shaking doesn't harm the mycelium.  Shaking often does.  As I said above, if a jar doesn't recover, it means it was contaminated anyway, so toss it out.

You don't always see the bacterial contaminations. When you shake and it doesn't recover, it is most probable that there was a bacterial contam which you just didn't/couldn't notice before shaking.

That's an idea. Or... if you are sure that there are no bacteria/contams in the jar (just to be safe I wouldnt bother), you could wait for a couple days for one of the jars to grow and then in a glovebox(any sterilized-controlled environment) shake the jar to loosen a piece of colonized substrate and place/pour it in the other jar. That should give it a jump start.

I see now. He means shaking repeatedly in a short time frame harms mycelium.

The word "often" can be construed two different ways here.

I put a soft based chair on an armchair. Not to disturb neighbors. (Live in a flat). Then I shake them by hitting chair's soft base.
But I continued a little bit more after breaking all the kernels.
So i thought i may damaged the spores but you say it's contemned...
alright won't use them at my main bulk. but i won't toss them out, i'll wait. if they starts to colonize I'll spawn them at another little tub. just to see the result, not to eat.

So... The most logical way is preparing new grain jars. After that I won't inoculate again. I've 2ccs of Cambodian spores at fridge but it's better to do grain to grain transfer, right? Because I'll have %100 colonized jars a few days later and with grain transfers colonization takes less time?

He means, you only shake the jar ONCE.  If you do it more then once, it'll harm the mycelium.

When I shake my jars, I beat the living snot out of them to break up all the mycelium, then sort of shake & spin for a minute or two to make sure the mycelium gets distributed well.

It's hard to tell if carcass shook them more then once, since it doesn't look like english is his first language.

That's right my second language is english.
Let me explain in another way.
I banged them 4-5 times to something like tire. Then made shaking & spinning business with my hands
???
is it clear now?
