i cannot STAND the smell of pressure cooking wbs!!!! it has to be the worst smell as far as im concerned. any advice on how to sterilize wbs without stinking up the house? does rye berries smell as bad? maybe a better seed? do bags smell less than jars? maybe going without the soak and just simmering? right now i rinse, rinse, rinse until water is clear as its gonna get. i let it soak overnight 18-24 hrs. i rinse a couple more times and simmer till steam starts to rise; constantly stirring to avoid bursted kernels. i then drain, rinse with hot water, and p[ut them in a mortar tub. i hand dry with papertowels till kernels are dry to the touch. i then pc for 90 minutes once pressure reaches 15 psi. the lids on my jar are the two peice type which i hammer 2 holes into, each a little bigger than an 18 1/2 gauge needle and cover with micropore tape and foil. can i pc less time, like 60 min., and be safe. i need to figure something out cause this shit STINKS! HEEEEEEEEEEEELPPP!

i only use rye but i looooooove the smell of rye while it's sterilizing. smells like your making a stew or some sort of bread.

Take a 1/2 pint jar and fill it with water and coffee grounds. As the PC heats up it will boil the coffee. Will not kill the smell but it will help

anyways, the coffee idea sound like it would help. might try that tomorrow
if i had a garage, i would definitely do it out there. i do have a separate room where i fruit and work which i might try that in. at least it wouldnt stink up the whole house.

I actually like the smell of cooking grains :-D
Pasteurizing a big pot of horse shit, then we're talking a bit of funk.
You can try adding vinegar to the water in the pot, or just turning on the fan above your stove.

My roommate really hates the smell for some reason. I do all my stuff downstairs but in the cold months there's a pretty epic up-draft due to the temperature difference.
So when I open up my sterilizer after a batch of WBS (15 quarts) this HUGE cloud of steam comes out and literally flows sideways out of the room, across the hall and up the stairs into the living room right where he's usually sitting with his laptop.
Hits him right in the face within seconds of opening. All I have to do is count, 3, 2, 1. Then the coughing/gagging begins.
Personally, I kind of like the smell. Reminds me of a bakery.

Hey man i dont care about grains but the manure/coir is a bit too earthy sometimes so I have a portable electric double-hotplate I got for $30. I just run it on an extension cord outside and can cook whatever i like.
The other side of the coin for me is that during the summer months in Australia the last thing i want to be producing inside is steam! $30 well spent IMO
