Temperature controlled heaters....
    #990949 - 10/24/02 08:42 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

Hello.
I'm wondering what type of heater can be used for a small grow space (closet) to keep the tempfor my casings between 75-80 degrees farenheit. I've considered heating pads as an option but they don't have temperature settings. Under the conditions I don't beleive I can use an aquarium heater neither. Is there a safe alternative like a small radiator or something that has temperature settings???? Where can I find something like this? Thanks.

I've heard of people using electric blankets but that's not that practicle. You could probably add a dimmer switch or something to the pad. If you want to heat the whole closet just get a small electric space heater.

Why cant you use an aquarium heater? either that or build a incubator get a switch from radio shack or some pet stores that will turn off when it hits desired temp plug a heat rock or space heater into it and let it go. but a fish tank heater a 2 gallon jug and a big igloo cooler have worked wonders for me and I can fit 3 good sized casings in there. and the whole setup cose about 15-20 dollars.

I beleive a small electric heater should do the trick but I'm looking for one that has a temp setting on it, like a thermostat, Ive never used one before so I'm not sure in what kind of stores they are sold and how effective they are. Thanks for the advice though.

my heat pad has a dimmer switch but you do have to keep a close eye on it as you are setting power not temp. why not an aquarium heater? you can take the plug off and feed the wire through a hole in the cap of a large soda bottle. fill the bottle with water put the cap on and no moisture will escape

It maybe tricky to get the temp just right but you could build one of these

http://www.fungifun.org/pf/incubator.htm

The plastic bin with the water and heater is bin A, bin B goes inside A. You could put perlite in the bottom of B and make the fruting chamber, and just cut a section out of B's lid and put plexiglass in the void so your shrooms would have light.

even if you hold out for something with temperature settings on it, you can't be sure those settings are accurate so you'll have to measure temp anyway. i'd go with the aquarium heater. if you go for a space heater, you probably don't want anything that uses a fan. both aquarium heaters and space heaters can be found at kmart/walmart.
