So What is the Truth with Dehydrators and Potency Loss? * 1
    #9906105 - 03/03/09 07:42 PM (15 years, 19 days ago)

I’ve been reading posts and can’t get a straight answer.

My dehydrator has no temp setting.
A food thermometer reads 160F

I had shrooms in for 2 hours and some turned black in the bag after.
So they weren’t dry. (?)

So from your experience with a dehydrator will 160F kill my potency and if so how can I rig it to work?
(I have a paper towel on the bottom it’s down to 130).

Also, how long should they stay in so they don’t turn black?

What's the relative humidity in your house?  IF it's low like it is around my area, 20%, you don't need a dehydrator, just leave 'em sit on something grated, to allow air to go through and all around the mushrooms.

Be patient, don't use a dehydrator, they'll get crispy and shitty most of the time.

Okay, I'm in the exact same boat... I inherited a Mr coffee brand dehydrator...

On, Off, that's it

My food thermo reached 180!

Currently, I'm using it with the top off @ 115F  (note: This bitch WILL heat the area... Don't leave it alone in your grow/colonization room or anything.)

You can also open her up and disconnect the heating element, which should still work a bit better than a fan.

If you had shrooms that werent dry they should have never been inside a bag first off, and if they were half dry... you paid for more than you got(water weight), and then they rotted cause its either dry or wet, no inbetween....

No, a dehydrator wont kill your potency.Yes, heat causes potency loss, but no...you WILL NOT notice it.

throw em in, let em dry

That pretty much sums it up...

Keep it on as low heat as possible, but regardless - its been shown time and time again that heated dehydrators WONT make your mushrooms lose potency.  If your dehydrator is going above 160 or 180... i might be a little hesitant about it, but they make dehydrators that operate at 115 or even lower... so maybe invest in one of those.

Fan + desiccant is best, but when you're drying oz's at a time... its better to use a food dehydrator with some heat and get them done in 24 hours than to let them sit wet for 6 days while you blow a fan at them in vain.

If you insist on using a dehydrator... which you shouldn't do if your humidity levels are low in the winter...

This is what I do in the summer time when the humidity is high and air drying doesn't work as well.
Dry them out as much as you can with a fan... fans will push the humidity away from the mushrooms allowing them to dry.
Then, put your pre-dried mushrooms in the dehydrator for integrals of 10 minutes in, 10 minutes out, over the next hour.
put them in a bag, then check the bag in an hour or so... if the shrooms start to feel mushy or wet... repeat until the bag of mushrooms no longer feels damp.
Mushrooms can actually rehydrate if there is source in the bag... meaning, if all of your shrooms are cracker dry and one of them is a little wet still, it can transfer the moisture and begin to rehydrate your others.

And no, I've never had any potency loss with heat dried mushrooms... I'd be willing to say that was false.

Umm. what is false? That heat doesnt cause potency loss? Cause it does...you just dont notice it because it isnt much.

Thanks everyone.

I currently have a paper towel doubled up on the first tray with the shrooms on the top.

I have the lid off and the temp fluctuates between 85-100F.

This may take a while.

My shrooms are pretty small (one's like in my avatar), but they're dry within 4 hours at those temps on mine

Until they're dry. I can't give you an exact time. If you're drying these:

Maybe an hour or or 2 at 155F

These:

up to 8 hours for some of the fruits on the highest setting

Yeah, use it if you want your shrooms crispy.

If you're storing them you want them crispy dry. They should snap in half when dried correctly. Even slightly moist shrooms will mold when stored.

Yeah, they'll snap, but I'm not talking regular storage dry, I know how to store shrooms man, my experiences with the food dehydrators (that don't have temperature settings like the ones they're talking about) they get too hot and make 'em fucked up.

I guess he's the trusted cultivator here, so don't listen to me.  Just stick 'em in your food dehydrator for 28 hours and come back to burnt up dust.

Cheers

Burnt?  You must have a hell of a food dehydrator - is yours for like... curing bear meat?

I have full confidence i could fill mine up, plug it in (only has one heat setting) and come back a week later and see nothing wrong with them - it usually takes me about 36 hours to dry 6 racks full - which usually ends up as about 3-4 ozs dry depending on how full I stuff it.

I dunno, maybe my food dehydrator is a bigger piece of shit than everyone elses.
I tried to make some deer jerky in it once and it fucked that up too.

Chill bro. We both stated our opinions based on our personal experiences. Nobody is saying you're wrong.

I've never had a problem with my mushrooms turning to dust in my dehydrator. You shouldn't need 28 hours to dry mushrooms on a dehydrator running as hot as you're talking about.

You're right, I apologize.

When I do use my food dehydrator, I just let it run for 10 minutes, turn it off, leave the lid on, come back in 10 minutes, then maybe do 20 minutes with it on, then 20minutes off....

only way to make my piece of shit dehydrator work for the job

Sorry again for losing my cool, I can't help it I'm Polish

I think all your doing with the papertowels is blocking the airflow of your dehydrator. take that shit off and use it like its meant to be used, i have never needed to run my dehydrator for more than 12 hours to crisp up my shrooms. If you run it for 24 i guarentee you wont have a problem.

Edit: FUCK worrying about the heat.Your shrooms wont be bunk.i promise.

(that paper towel is a fire hazard if anything)
