none are active, fill out the proper ID info for each mushroom if u want to know what they are, and read the rules.

also, 99.9% chance active mushrooms arent gonna be found in a cow pasture in sac.

the mushroom season for norcal just ended, look for the bay area/california thread with lots of pages and posts if u want to learn about your local season.

Habitat doesn't really fit, nor does it look much like P. candolleanaPsathyrella species for sure, though.

I've found cans in precisely that habitat.  The stems do look a bit suspect though.

How did you verify this?

I'm not saying that you did not, but again, you can't really say with certainty for most Psathyrella species if you don't do the microscopy.  And even then, Ps. candolleana is most likely a cluster.  If the morphological features and habitat fit well with the description of that species, I would consider it suspect.

The only clusters of Psathyrella candolleana I am aware of are caespitose.  Arora mentions hymenocephala and incerta but the odds are the cans I found were cans.  I appreciate your diligence in this matter though.  Do you have a copy of the monograph?  I had two and just gave one away.

The only way any of us know any mushroom with the type of certitude you are applying is to do a complete microscopy workup and a genetic sequence.  How often do you do that?

Smith's monograph is online, but I don't have Kit Van Waveren, unfortunately.  Else forwarded me a few of the recent Psathyrella articles as well, which are pretty darn good.

If you are thorough, you can get away with doing the microscopy and saying with some confidence, which species it is, sometimes...  But yeah, an ITS would be optimal.  I do neither right now.  Since I don't have much to work with, I just try and read as much as possible until I have better tools. It totally sucks, but that's just how it goes.

Well, there ya go.

I wasn't even aware of Kit Van Waveren's "The Dutch, French and British Species of Psathyrella".  Primarily because I'm not that interested.  And I don't do online or copypaper copies if I can help it.  When I hold a book in my hand I feel professional.  It's all about feelings, isn't it?
