Incubation Chamber Humidity?

Out of curiousity - are there issues that can be caused with humidity in an incubation chamber? Last time I made one I put about 3" of water on the bottom along with a fish tank heater to keep the water/temperature at approximately 75 degrees. Now, this worked fine, except that when I opened it I could feel like a wall of humidity hitting me. Everything inside was soaked - constantly.
Now, since I'm considering trying spawn bags, I'd like to do something similar but I'm worried about the humidity screwing with the moisture level inside the bag. Sadly I don't have many options for location so this is the only way I can really keep the heat at a static level.

why did you have the lid on the tub holding the water? you should only have a lid on the inner tub holding your jars or bags..
there should be no moisture in or around the jars...
this time of year you shouldnt need to worry about incubation(just set them at room temp) your house should already be warm enough.

Sadly I live in a 200 year old home, and the average temperature is about 50 degrees - even with heat. As for why i screwed up, I understand now. I had the jars just sitting in a single tub, not a tub inside of a tub.

Was digging through posts when I came to this one. It is still freezing inside my house right now, so I am using a TiT setup. The first time I used it I completely messed up and covered both tubs completely with a garbage bad to raise the temp. Well, thus also raised the humidity to 100% in the inner tub and all my jars got heavy bacterial growth, which makes complete sense. So I have these new jars sitting in the inner tub, of course with no garbage bag this time! My problem is humidity is still somehow getting into the inner tub. I dont understand why since the lower tub's water should evaporate right out if needed and the inner tub has a sealed top. It is about 20% more humidity in inner tub then in my room! Any recommendation?? And I do have a dozen jars sitting in my room at room temp too just in case lol Dont want to mess them all up!

Why do you care about humidity in an incubator for jars that are colonizing?
Humidity does not matter until fruiting.
I would look into the temperature you have it set to, rather than the humidity it produces.
Keep it at about 75-80F.

I figured the extremely high humidity while colonizing in the jar got the dry verm layer wet and too much moisture in the jars which I felt was why they all had bacterial contamination.
Dont get me wrong. I wasnt trying to add any humidity. I just messed up. I was trying raise heat by completely covering the bins with a garbage bag. It raised the heat, but also raised humidity all the way to fruiting conditions lol

It just has an aquarium heater at the bottom. It says it is 73 in the inner chamber now

Yes. Cheap hygrometer for sure. It says it is about 45% humidity in my room and when I put in inner chamber it goes up to about 65%.

this is not ultra high humidity, nor should you trust a cheap, unreliable, uncalibratible hygrometer.
The humidity in the tub is not your probelm, it is something else.
Either a bad inoculant, or bad sterile technique.

I dont trust the meter at all. I just know I saw condensation on the inner chamber last time and the hygrometer said 100% humidity. Then all my jars were ruined with bacteria. Just trying not to make any mistakes this time! Maybe that wasnt the problem. I just wasnt sure. Thank you and I will not worry about it being in the TiT!

Condensation is from a temperature differential, and has nothing to do with the amount of humidity in the tub.
When you take a beer out of the fridge, and it starts sweating, is this because of the humidity, or the temperature differential?

Sounds good to me. Like I said, I just didnt think that water in my inner tub was good. Everyone always talks about how important maintaining moisture in jars is. I figured with all that moisture with them it would throw that off. Guess it was just something else. Hope these guys go better. Been a week and a half and no signs of germination yet, so thats why I just wanted to try incubator again. 60 degrees in my room usually
