Would it be possible to use freshly brewed coffee as a pesticide for killing aphids. Also would coffee harm a sage.
Thanks in advance

I know it's taboo, but I'd also like to ask a question related to this topic. Sorry OP, I mean no disrespect. But I genuinely don't know the answer to your question.
I live in a place where it's icy for like 66% of the year and there's no sand around, but I need to put something down as topsoil that's granular to use in place of sand that the roots of ,my cactus Trich seedlings can grab onto when they sprout in a few days. What could work? I think dehydrated instant coffee might work since it's grainy and not easily breakable. I know it sounds retarded but I'm at the end of my rope here, will that damage my seedlings?

I think Perlite or Vermiculite would suit your needs but make sure it does not already have fertilizers in it which could burn young plants. So don't buy miracle grow as it is already loaded with it

No, coffee does nothing as an insecticide, but is a great source of organic nitrogen. I drink alot of coffee, and save all of my used grounds to make into a "tea" like one would with composted manure.

Haha, yeah! It would be weird to not have sand anywhere. We've got it at every gas station, hardware store, and garden center... whats weird to me is the fact that NOBODY in this damn city has any 4-6 in clay pots.

Wapakz, I would try and pulverize perlite and sprinkle that on top. Or just get a toothpick, or something small, and press the seeds into the soil a tiny bit. just dont bury them or push them too far.
Never heard of coffee as a pesticide either

Same here. Always heard Tobacco but not coffee. On a side note. I found a preying mantis egg sac the other day. Anyone know if they are as effective as advertised by the sites that sell them?

I was thinking of the crushed perlite idea. The roots are starting to form, so I'm going to do that tonight. Thanks for the good advice again!

Tobacco.
Sand everywhere. Even free sand in barrels at the end of certain streets. The free stuff is mixed with salt though.

I have read something once about coffee as a pesticide. However, I wouldn't count on it. Grow or purchase some habanero peppers, place in blender with water, strain and spray. Works well on a variety of insects, though insecticidal soap is probably less hassle for aphids.

They are effective indeed. They will kill beneficial insects though. So take that into consideration. Those fuckers are kinda creepy
I wouldn't use coffee as a pesticide. You may end up burning your plants.

I have to admit that is a big part of my attraction to them. They are some creepy looking fuckers indeed. If they could also be useful then I could really learn to get busy with em. Fun is a big part of the game after all. Liking your pest and pesticide are important imo if you are to take a side in the battle.

Nicotine is effective but beware of the mosaic virus getting spread by tobacco if you have members of the night shade family nearby (tomatoes, peppers, etc.). Also nicotine is toxic to other desirable plants/insects, and so I think it is overkill for aphids.

Your best first line of defense for aphids is to wash them off. If it's a potted plant, run it under the fucet thoroughly. If outdoors, hose them down. This will remove a good part. I usually use Safer's insecticidal soap after that. I've gotten rid of full on infestations indoors like that. It does take persistance though. You'll need to wash and apply soap regularly. It is said to be non-toxic. Your leaves may suffer a little, but the plant will come back after. It's certainly much better than what the bugs do. I hate aphids with a passion.
