Kratom Plant (I've looked already)
    #9850947 - 02/23/09 03:51 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

So I just purchased a 4+ year old Kratom plant. It is due to arrive on Wednesday or Thursday. My question for you all is, what size planter should I have ready for it?

I was thinking a 5 gallon barrel, like one that paint comes in, or something like that. Is that too big, too small? I already understand care and basic stuff like that, I just cant find a good idea of size of growing apparatus that I need to get.

Thanks!

I'd give it larger space than that, or put it in the ground if possible.

If you can't put it outside year around, get an 8 gal pot on rollers. Dirt is fucking heavy.

From what a scientist has told me in private communication, a tree will only become potent, and desirable if in ground for over 5+ years.  Then it will acquire a statistically significant amount of Mitragynine and 7OHM.  Obviously it can only be in ground if in a tropical climate, unless you have a big heated green house (unlikely).

Otherwise it will be active, but not in the same way that mature kratom is.

hmm?

A clone of even the choicest variety will not have the same alkaloid content of it's parent plant - that is simply it's potential alkaloid percent/ratio.

I say this because a friend has worked extensively with the Rifat strain, and has done qualitative and quantitative lab workups on the material, grown in the Caribbean.

It would be like taking a small pup off a 10 year old bridgesii and growing it out a foot, kg for kg you will get much less mesc. off the fresh growth.

I disgree, from personal experiments in my belly . My tree was about 2ft tall, and had a good kick at 5g dried. I was impressed. It was a Rifat. Someone stole it and MANY other kratom plants too. Oh well, it would have died in the ice storm that caused us to go weeks without power.

Yeah my Rifat passed last Fall too =(

But yeah a scientist I know swears that there's a mitragynine spike at 5+ years.

I know from experience that my tree was active, but have not done many side by side experiments.  I did notice that the younger leaves were more jittery and less relaxing than a mature plant.  I do have a bit of mature rifat leaf on hand though =)

Just remember that clones are exact duplicates of their mother. That includes age.

Go make ya some Rifat tea. I'm going to go roll one and lay on the couch and watch some HD.

What about a 15-30 gallon storage container. Maybe I could move it outside during summer or something. Like a big tupperware deal? Is that a good idea?

30-gallon storage bin

Something like that? Perhaps? Put wheels on it even? Put it outdoors in summer?

The ideal would be to have it planted in the ground, if possible.

if planting in the ground is not an option then a huge tub like that would be good, so long as you have a way of moving it if needed.
if you do indeed get a tub like that, get a dark coloured one and make sure it doesn't let any light through, roots don't like light.
i guess you could always paint the outside or cover it in some way if you can only get one that lets light in.
and make sure it has lots of drainage holes.

Ok. Thanks.

By the way, how many drainage holes should I have? Or how far apart should they be to ensure proper drainage? What should I do with the excess water? How should I collect it?

Thanks.

I've never grown Kratom before, as I'm sure you can tell. I appreciate all the help you all have given me.

Put as many as you want. There is no set amount. The idea is to make sure there is no standing water
Really you can't have too many as long as the soil stays in. Personally i have a ton of really small holes (1/4")
