My mom might be dying
    #9844798 - 02/22/09 03:29 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

Long story short: My mom and I have never gotten along. We fight constantly or simply don't speak to eachother. It's really fucked up.

I just got in a fight with my dad about how I'm the black sheep in the family and we start yelling and I tell him how fucked up it is for his wife to not even acknowledge I exist - then he says she has to get a hysterectomy. I ask if she has cervical cancer and he's not really sure, says it's something else that he doesn't even know the name for.

I feel like I just got kicked in the nuts. I really don't know how to feel.

Hysterectomies for cancer only make up 10% of all hysterectomies.

If its not for cancer, she's (probably) not dying.  Just having pain, infections, or random uterine problems.  Don't assume the worst.

http://www.womenshealth.org/a/hysterectomy_reasons_indications_alternatives.htm

About 10% of hysterectomies are done for cancer.
Hysterectomy for Fibroids (leiomyomata uteri)
The most common reason for non-cancer hysterectomies, about 30%.
Hysterectomy For Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding (DUB)
Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding is also a major cause of hysterectomies. It is defined as vaginal bleeding that has no specific genital tract causes, and is excessive.
Hysterectomy for Endometriosis
Pain relief is the major motivation here, and it accounts for about 20%.
Hysterectomy for Uterine Prolapse
This accounts for about 16%. Prolapse can cause urine loss or blockage, and problems with bowel movements. The uterus can fall down the vagina so that the cervix is exposed and irritated by being outside the body.
Hysterectomy for Chronic Pelvic Pain
The pain must be present for more than 6 months and a laproscopy must have been done and be negative. The pain must be severe enough to interfere with the woman's life.

Your relationship with your mother sounds just like mine. I can't say I wouldn't be sad if she died, but I would be less sad than most people around if their moms died.
