Should I Modify My Propane Stove?
    #9828958 - 02/19/09 07:33 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

I bought a Camp Chef Explorer, which is a portable 2-burner 60,000btu propane stove and plumbed it into my home's gas line. Compared to it's performance with propane it does not get very hot. I would like to improve its performance for the sake of heating my sterilizer faster so I am looking at two potential changes and I'm hoping someone who has been through this or knows gas can help me out. The supply line is 1" adapted to 1/2" for about a 4' run with 3 elbows in it. Is this a bottle neck? Or does the problem lie with the burner design: Do I need to drill-out the 80 holes that distribute the gas where it burns so that it can flow more readily?

you said you hooked it up to your home gas line...is it natural gas? if so then that is your problem.

Thanks Brains' I know that is the problem... I'm just not sure if there an orifice somewhere inside that can be replaced. If I did replace it though, then the unit wouldn't work on propane if I wanted to take it camping or something. SO, I came up with a better solution:

There is a pretty simple fix and it makes a BIG difference - with natural gas my full AA 930 takes about 30 minutes to get up to 20 PSI but with propane that time is cut down to under 5 minutes.

The output on the propane regulator is a female 1/4" pipe thread, a common size, so I installed a T between the regulator and the hose that runs to the stove. The other side of the T connects to my natural gas line (which has a valve on it) - so now I can switch between propane and natural gas at will. I turn both to full open to get up to pressure, then switch off the propane to conserve it.
