Tests your liquid culture with either pf cakes, or grain jars. If one contams from your test batch it could just be a flub up, if all test jars contaminate it is likely your liquid culture is bad. It is good to test before one goes ahead and goes through many pounds of perfectly good grain only to find out they should have been patient and tested it (or made mycelium syringes in the first place)

If one wants to kill two birds with one stone, make a grain jars up and test it with your lc, then make mycelium syringes if the jar is good, then you know you have a good lc to use and now a ton of mycelium syringes.

For future grows, you may just want to start with mycelium syringes (unless you are doing an LC clone or something if you get down the road with the grows) as mycelium syringes can be made quickly and easily, with less threat of a contam, as healthy lc looking lc can easily harbor contams that will not show visibly without already being too late.

It doesn't matter which really, rye and birdseed are common, and birdseed is extremely cheap. Just make sure you follow the proper procedure for the grains you choose.

There are a couple routes, for birdseed for instance,  one can rinse the birdseed very well, get all the crap off of it. Then soak for 24 hours, dry enough to pass the spoon/hand/toilet paper test so the moisture is on the inside of the grain and pretty dry on the outside. Those tests can be found by doing a quick search. Then load it up and pc, or one can rinse it again after doing the above and then simmer for a bit, dump it out and then make sure the moisture is correct on the outside. If you simmer the water on the outside will evaporate a lot easier and will be much easier to finish the job and may not have to pull out the hair dryer and a bunch of towels.
