Drying straight to desiccant chamber?
    #9804456 - 02/15/09 08:21 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

So ive been reading about different drying methods and was wondering about the desiccant way. I read that you should place your fruits out in the open and have a fan blowing on them for 48 hrs, then dry them the rest of the way with a desiccant chamber.

doesnt psilocybin break down from oxygen? so if they were out for 48hrs, would a lot of potency degrade?

so i was wondering if you could just go straight to the desiccant chamber after harvesting or will the fruits have too much water weight to be dried completely by just desiccant alone.

it's not the air, but the oxygen in the air that oxidizes the psilocybin, decreasing potency.

you want to dry them within 24-30 hours or so.

I go right to the chamber but I make sure I use fresh desiccant and a filter trap underneath the desiccant to trap the moisture= cracker dry in 24 hours...

I use a warm air system with desiccant. It uses nitrogen so I don't get oxidization and my fruits are cracker dry in about an hour.

[/sarcasm]

Seriously, oxygen effecting potency? Mushrooms NEED OXYGEN TO GROW, how would it screw them up?

Straight to desiccant is an option, but air movement and heat are going to exponentially decrease drying time. Also make sure you use enough desiccant media to completely absorb the moisture, or you will end up with moldy shrooms.

i am referring to after they are done growing, when they are done forming the chemicals they produce. not the fruits themselves. the chemicals within the fruitbody being affected by light and oxygen

This is true to a point. Oxidation can be SEEN for the most part. It is what we call bruising, it looks blue/purple.

whats up with this redneck...?

anyways, ive read a lot of places that oxygen indeed does breakdown psilocybin so i want to air dry as less as possible. im thinking bout gettin a dehydrator but i want to work with a desiccant first b4 i spend moneey for a dehydrator. but other than that, where would i go about fining any silica gel or other dessicants?

Epsom salt is quite abundant and can be found at pretty much any store that has food/drugs/etc. Silica gel can be found in large quantities as kitty litter. (It will say 100% pure silica gel on the package)
