Thinking about Dying
    #9782275 - 02/12/09 12:05 AM (15 years, 2 months ago)

I don't want your opinions on what happends after death.  But I've just been worrying what actually happends when we are dying.  I know it probably depends mostly on what way.  Cause if we are shot in the head or hit the ground at terminal velocity we probably won't be conscious that we're dying.

But I'm thinking more about when some of us will go through a slow or drawn out death.  For example in the movie 300 at the end when they were getting shot with arrows and bleeding to death and he said "it's an honor to die at your side".  That must be such an intense experience.

So I want to know any logical/scientific facts about what actually happends.  Are we just in agonizing pain until we loose consciousness?  What type of things will be racing through our heads?

Edit:  Please no religious explanations

Wow, that really made me think. Thank you.
I could only imagine what it would be like to die a slow painful death next to someone fighting. That would be a very interesting experience. Except for i'd be screaming my ass off from intense pain.
If i was in such agonizing pain i'd probably lose my head and just like flashback i'd imagine. Like go a little bit delirious from pain and have my life flash before my eyes and stuff.
I'm gonna go out the same way i came in, kicking and screaming.

I saw 300 on a low dose of shrooms when it came out in theaters so when they were dying at the end it reallly made me think about dying so deeply and I got kind of scared about it.

It makes me wonder how life must of really been like before all this marvelous medical technology we have now.
Those people were tough as hell.

Though all the other answers herein are good, they miss the point. Many people who have died report a type of euphoria, which is understandable because the nuerons and synapses in your brain are firing off exponentially, futily trying to restart your bodys oxygen supply. When these nuerons fire off they trigger memories and euphoric peptides to ease the body's passing, normally the last thing to die in the body is the brain, and after ten to twelve minutes, it's over and irreversable. No one knows what we feel beyond that.

It can be assumed you feel nothing when your dead because your brain doesn't register feelings anymore. Your not in your physical body anymore, whatever energy, be it a soul or whatever, that powered you is gone, and the shell of your body is incapable of housing the soul anyfurther, hence you cease to exist.

Medically speaking, the brain goes through a series of electrical triggers as it shuts down, which in turn release chemicals in the brain to ease ones passing. These chemicals induce euphoria, black out, memory flashes (as if in dream state), out of body experiences, etc. etc. Such experiences have been documented by the medical establishment.

I didn't write this, but i agree with most of it.

sometimes i think yah it would suck if i randomly died but if it was sudden and fast it might be better than just slowly dying for years or just dying of "old age"... ectasy times a million sounds nice !

Wow. I never knew that. It's things like that, that really interest me into studying the brain.

A friend of mine had his heart just stop. He was dead for almost 20 minutes.
They got him started again he was mute for days. It all came back and he now has a defibrillator implanted. He said there was nothing. No white light, life flashing before his eyes or anything.  So I guess it's different for everyone. Maybe it's different when the universe decides it is your time.
I've always held the assumption that since you can't destroy energy it only changes form. So when we die maybe our soul, consciousness, energy or what ever you want to call it moves on to a higher plane or dimension.

In a way I fear death, because of the unknown (I just happen to strongly believe that there is nothing after life). But hey, can it be worse than being unborn? Weren't we technically dead before conception? If I've gone through it before, I can and will do it again. The way I get my mind off of it is by knowing that everyone has to do it, and that I can say I have enjoyed my life thus far. Live each day like it's your last; an expression that's way overused, but I embrace it.

Alot of the time you will spend your final hours nicely sedated on morphine. Some deaths are fucked up though.

yeah most of us will probably die in the hospital on however many opiates we want.  But we still probably will feel the "nuerons and synapses in your brain are firing off exponentially, futily trying to restart your bodys oxygen supply. When these nuerons fire off they trigger memories and euphoric peptides to ease the body's passing"

hopefully it will ease the body's passing, but I'm still worried about it.

It would be more intense to die in the heat of battle though like in 300 and bleeding to death.

Nah, I just don't see how there could be a god. My favorite example of how a perfect god fucked up is by creating animals when he knew  that there would be furries one day. Or more realistically, why test Adam and Eve when he knew they would fail? Some love. To each his own, I suppose.
