I have no idea what the face is for.
I thought the site was a good resource for ID work. Didn't think king cranky would show up.

Thanks for posting the link, but the site is shit, plain and simple. I am not saying that just because I love Psilocybe - which I do - but because I consider a site dedicated to mushrooms, which excludes a genus (probably because the site owner is anally retentive about them being active), to be unscientific bunk. Don't get me wrong, what's there is OK, but science must be unprejudiced.

So, do you know the reason why he totally omits the genus Psilocybe? The only legitimate reason I could think of is because he is tired of getting contacted by kids looking for a cheap trip. Other than that...

I dont know, check out mushroom experts page on the genus...

kinda weak eh, i sent Kuo and email about it and he never replied. I said the same thing you did German Kahuna...they should be listed for the sake of science.

Roger Phillips is a pretty good photographer and his work on nature food is inspiring. I wouldn't refer to him for mushroom identification though; not that he sucks at it, but there are other resources out there maintained by people who specialize in that sort of stuff.
Roger's mushroom pics are definitely worthwhile though

I don't fully agree. The pics small (max 320 x 400) and his photography methods don't always pick up the colors very well. For example he says his G. aeruginosus is turning green but you can't really see it in the pic. Also none are in habitat, which makes the pics a bit ugly and boring.
Also he says that some Gymnopilus species can be deadly. I told him about the error and we emailed back and fourth a couple times, but he wanted proof that Gymnopilus is never deadly before he will correct the error. Its not possible to prove a negative, but the 30 year toxicology report doesn't mention any symptoms that are not caused by psilocybin.
Everyone should read the 30 year report, its great info!
Unfortunately it failed to convince Roger that Gymnopilus penetrans is not deadly.
Here are some quotes from his email:
"Do you eat Gymnopilus? If so do you eat it as food or for a high? As far as is known they do not contain psilocybin although I know some people do claim that they do."
"One of the problems about this sort of publishing is that one needs to take a most conservative possition for fear of there being a problem and ending up in court. I would be happy to change the text if I can find a reliable source of information, do you know of publications?"

I see your point. On the other hand, his photography is qualitatively sound, consistent and due to the lighting setup, color rendition is actually more accurate than in habitat shots.

He has a point here. Claiming that mushrooms are not deadly is one thing for an anonymous shroomerite, but quite another for a distinguished author. While no-one will very likely bring PotHead420Shroomer to court for stating that 'you should munch those sexy fuckers', the chances that a decently selling author may be held responsible for some dumbass' stupidity are very realistic. So I can somehow relate to his conservatism.

That doesn't exactly add to my perception of the level of his expertise, though. Being afraid of legal repercussion and spreading misinformation while giving the general public the impression that you are a mycology expert are two different pair of shoes, at least IMHO.

I can relate but personally I can't stand people who don't like to take risks. That personality trait annoys me more than just about anything else.
His comment about them being deadly is totally out of left field though. I sent him a long email yesterday and asked him to change it to inedible.
I have a feeling he might have said that because they can look like Galerina. That wouldn't be very good science though.
