straw or coco coir for substrate?

I know manure works best (right?), but I want to try something else.
I already have a bale of straw (does straw go bad or is it good for at least a year?) so Id like to use that. Is there anything I can add to the straw to boost nutrients?
But if coco coir gives much better results in either yield or potency compared to straw then Ill buy that. What else would you suggest to go inside the coco coir and in what amounts? Ive heard people use coffee grounds.

Wait, crazy thought here. What about straw AND coco coir AND coffee or whatever it is that people add. Has anyone tried something like that or know someone who has?

Yeah, that will work. Add anything you got in any proportions.
I would go for something like:
6 parts coir 3 parts straw 2 parts vermiculite 1 part coffee grounds

yeah mixed substrates do best: and straw with a thick substrate depth will produce some monsters given your moisture content is correct.

Ok, so far looks like I'm gonna try:
straw, coir, verm, coffee grounds, and some gypsum as my substrate
Good advice so far, thanks shroomheads.

Do a little more coir than you would straw. Coir is more resilient against contaminates than straw.

I'd drop the coffee grounds from the mix. I've had lots of contam problems with coffee grounds before.
But as others said, a mix would be best. Just a bit more coir than straw, but toss in any kind of bulk sub you can. Cubes like varied substrates.
