is my liquid culture contaminated?
    #9760313 - 02/08/09 01:26 PM (15 years, 2 months ago)

I inoculated this jar yesterday afternoon and after about 20 hours of incubation at around 75-80 degrees it looks like this...I used a spore print and it has no odor...is this a contam?

Looks fine to me, but only way to be sure is to test it on grain, BRF or agar.

Its not normal to have that much growth in one day from Cube mycelium. Its gotta be a contam. plus cube myc doesn't look like that unless you shake the Shit out of it, but even then, its hard to get small chunks like that. That looks like a bunch of sediment.

Terence McKenna Said:
"We have to create culture, don't watch TV, don't read magazines, don't even listen to NPR. Create your own roadshow. The nexus of space and time where you are now is the most immediate sector of your universe, and if you're worrying about Michael Jackson or Bill Clinton or somebody else, then you are disempowered, you're giving it all away to icons, icons which are maintained by an electronic media so that you want to dress like X or have lips like Y. This is shit-brained, this kind of thinking. That is all cultural diversion, and what is real is you and your friends and your associations, your highs, your orgasms, your hopes, your plans, your fears. And we are told 'no', we're unimportant, we're peripheral. 'Get a degree, get a job, get a this, get a that.' And then you're a player, you don't want to even play in that game. You want to reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash that's being manufactured out of the bones of a dying world."

Well, doesn't look like bacteria, so I am thinking that it is alright,  but you will have to test and see.  LC's have to be proven clean because it is nearly impossible to tell if contam is present other than a greasiness from bacteria.  That is a bit fast for spores to ferment, but not improbable.

Evolution is Lamarckism in disguise.  Adaptation never creates a new species or trait, but rather the new species/trait always existed within the parent DNA until circumstances allowed it to be activated.  For instance, every wolf has the DNA for poodles, but that DNA would never be revealed without man selectively breeding for it.

How did you go about sterilizing your jars? It's hard to believe that myc. growth would occur so quickly, which means that it's probably contamination. If you were able to provide a little more info on your procedure, it might help you to get an answer.

No problem! enjoy the dishes, they're really nice!
let everything cool nice and slow in the PC if you cook them with agar inside. If you cool them rapidly they will deform. If you treat them nice they last forever.

:jester:

And on topic I've seen LC to LC go that fast but not spores, didn't read it too carefull just looked at the pic. Might be good though, nothing obviously a contam.
test it.

Just my $0.02, I grew a nice trich LC. The myc looked just like mushroom myc up until it sporulated green all over the grain in my jars.

It grew probably 2x as fast as mushroom myc. Moral of the story is always test your LCs! (Oh, and you can't tell the difference between the myc sometimes)

Whatever it is, that's not mycelium.

There's no way mycelium would grow that much in less than a day, especially from a spore inoculation. I can guarantee you that.

You just didn't boil it nearly long enough to fully sterilize it. 20 minutes is not at all sufficient. You generally need over an hour, but every grower has their own preference as to how long it should be done. Experiment and see what works for you. I hope this helped.

I wouldn't trust boiling at all. For any length of time.

I PC or autoclave. No exceptions.

You don't do a LC for an hour. 20 should be fine from the tek's I've seen. You can't really know until you test it so give it a go and see what you have.

would you just test it on a prepared substrate? or is there a way to test without possibly wasting ur jars
