crazy popcorning shiitake block

I thought these 4 blocks were gonna fail at first. Still perfecting my bulk sawdust prep methods, I made these 4 shiitake blocks waaayy too wet. Water was actually polling in the bottom, and all colonized but the bottom 1-1.5 inches, which was soggy and way too wet. I ended up mixing up the bags well, and they colonized a bit better. They started bubbling like crazy as you can see. The bottom bit of plastic I left on so the less colonized part wouldn't make a mess. Gonna be a good flush I think!
I wonder if the extra moisture is causing such extreme popcorning. I wonder too if the flush is gonna just be insane because of this. I hear mushrooms like water ya know. What do you all think?

You might want to remove the plastic on the bottom or it will encourage trichoderma growth down there. I wash shiitake blocks under the faucet every second day, or for the ones outside, I spray them with the hose everyday for that reason.
Looks good. Should be pinning soon. Did you give it a week-long cold shock? RR

I cold shocked it for about 3-4 days, in the bag, then these 2 were popcorning like crazy, so I wanted to get them out of the bag. I have 2 more still cold shocking outside that look much like these 2. They will get the full week cold shock. But it was like 74F today in TN, so not much of a cold shock today very unseasonal here.
Thanks for the tip on the plastic. Usually I would have taken it off, but the bottom is wetter and partially uncolonized... I guess it will be best to take the plastic off and let the uncolonized part fall off as best it can. I am excited about these blocks for sure.

I forgot to mention the weight of these blocks. I just took them out of the GH to get the plastic off, and they each got to weight 12 pounds. They are so much heavier than any block that size for sure. All the extra water like I mentioned. Its like holding a friggin ham. It will either be an amazing flush or a huge disaster! Should we take bets?

If you won't pay attention those mushrooms will colonize your home. They're coming to life!

looks like you might have added too much grain or bran. Wait and see how they develop. It should look better on the second flush.

could it be because of the moisture content? If you read my first post, the blocks were made too wet and barely colonized. 3 of the four are in the GH and look like those pictures. The other didn't colonize well on the bottom, so I put it outside. It has been freezing temps here, so I suspect it's dead.
Does this look typical of over-supplemented blocks, or is that just an idea you had? Just wondering if it is based on particular knowledge or experience good sir.
Its been nearly 3 weeks since putting them in the GH, and Shiitake can definitely take some time. You think those balls will form shiitake, or ARE those the fuct up shiitake?

I followed this thread awhile back. Denger had something to say about this here.
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/9736099#9736099
I remembered thinking it would be nice to see some shiitake that were over supplemented. I have not grown shiitake and have not clue, but will be watching this thread to see how the next flush turns out, if in fact that is the issue. Please keep us posted with pics.

not much has changed. Do you think those wierd circular blobs ARE the shiitake, malformed because of too much bran? I used 1 qt of rye to inoculate the sawdust. Eyeballed like 10-20% bran and 10% gypsum in the mix, so it is possible its oversupplemented.
Do you all think that is the first flush, and perhaps I should remove those and dunk? Or will those form into caps?
I'm not sure what to do!
