White fuzz on hpoo?
    #9739779 - 02/05/09 09:27 AM (15 years, 1 month ago)

Hey guys this is my first time spawning to hpoo. I pastuerized it at 150 degrees for an hour then broke up a brf cake and threw it in then covered it with foil. A few days later the myc was growing but there is a small layer of white fuzz about half an inch thick over some spots. What is this? Is it ok? Thanks for the help!

a few thoughts but im no expert

its either:
FIREFANG
COBWEB
FUZZY MYC

sometimes horse manure harbors some firefang which i believe is a beneficial bacteria? and one of the reasons one should pasteurize instead of sterilize the bulk substrate. if it is firefang then i think its a good thing.

http://www.shroomery.org/8395/Using-poo-101
use ctrl + F (browser search function for looking for key words such as *firefang in the body of the page *in case you diddnt know)

but yeah - PICS would help more than anything

if its cobweb (which also fits your description) then that is NOT a beneficial bacteria. its a mold thats competing to live in your box! although i read somewhere that h2o2 can kill it really easy if caught early. without hurting your mycelium very much.

it also could just be extra fluffy aggressive mycelium.

just dont jump the gun. make sure you know what it is before you go trying to kill an extra fluffy type of cube myc.

im sure if you post a pic an *expert can really tell you whats up

good luck
-peace

It's cobweb mold. Mist it with a standard 3% hydrogen peroxide solution.

The stuff you buy at any local pharmacy/department store/grocery will work fine.

before you douse everything with h2o2, is the growth bright white or offwhite/gray?

No sense in sprayin down a bunch of firefang with h2o2, even tho I've never seen it other than small flakes throughout hpoo.

That is NOT firefang. Nor is it mycelium. Nor is it Santa Claus.

It's cobweb mold. He said it covered his substrate in a few days. Half an inch thick. He covered it with foil, so there is very little air exchange which promotes cobweb growth.

Firefang is bacteria. Cobweb is mold.

I'd like to hear the argument how firefang grew a half inch thick, let alone in three days.

Thanks for everyone's input.  I think it's cobweb mold... the texture is very whispy like a cloud with tiny hair-like projections that accumulate into a mass.  So i should mist it with hydrogen peroxide? should it be mixed with water? how much do i put in to kill it?
