New CPU heatsink???

So I recently bought a computer at an electronics store. Pretty decent Phenom Quad-core and 8 gigs of ram. Sadly, the fans in it blow ass, and he heatsink is a dinky piece of shit. I've ordered some 120mm fans an a controller for the case. I've replaced/installed hardware, but never involving the processor. With all the different types of heatsinks, I'm not exactly sure what I should be looking for. Anyone have any suggestions for my heatsink?
AMD Phenom X4 9500 Socket AM2+ (940) Price area for heatsink: 40-65 bucks.
Thanks in advance for helping a newb =/

Pure copper for maximum heat dissipation, I swear by this cooler.

Go for a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme and a silent 120mm fan or a Noctua NH-U12P
I have the Noctua and it's very silent
I'd go for a heatsink where you can replace the fan yourself. Preferbly with a ~120mm fan.

My favorite as well (though I use scythe fans).

This is the quietest unit I have ever used. It keeps my CPU very cool. Typically around 25 / 26c with the fan dialed down to 1200 rpm. I could go slower but I can't hear it as it is.
At Newegg
Be forewarned.... it's large. I had to mount my fan on the "pull" side as the heatsinks on my ram wanted the space where the CPU heatsink fan wanted to be. I could have just used slots 3 & 4 for my ram and left the fan on the "push" side, but mentally I was unable to do that even though that configuration is supported by my motherboard.
Also, the main board must be removed to install this unit. As I was building a new system this was not a consideration for me.

If money is a concern, go with an artic freezer pro. Fantastic performance from a 92mm fan, and it's quietish* even at 2000rpm
*As in, a system like that usually has a large graphics card what makes more noise when playing games.
If money is no concern, look at (http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/products/amdcooling) for inspiration. Massive heatsinks can afford to be quiet and cool. A lot of them look really pretty and shiny to, which to me makes a difference.

Regardless, you can't say it's a great heatsink/fan combo.
I don't find it noisy at all.

haha, nice choice, i use the same setup as well, but scythe fans for my case fans, and a silverstone adjustable for the heatsink (loud when cranked, but for the ultra, no need to have it higher than about 1/3 of the way up unless on a high overclock run)...
also, if you want something really nice but a little cheaper
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233003
is a very good heatsink, best you can get for the price and for much higher a lot of times. It stands up with the ultra, but is much cheaper...pretty much a copy of the ultra, but with 'heatpipe direct touch', both perform about the same.

I have the Asus Silent Square EVO 92mm Vapo Bearing CPU Cooler and my CPU went from a stifling 52c to 22c immediately following the installation! I can't even tell my PC is on half the time because it's so damn quiet. Highly recommend this model.

I just don't like small fans... they tend to be much more noisy than larger fans for equal airflow.

As a rule of thumb, that's right. But until they make an artic freezer with a 120mm fan the 92mm will have to do. And it does it's job well.
Also, if you can, have a listen to Noctua's fans. I've only been aware of them for a year but they are my favourite fan company. I believe their hype about optimised blade geometry, I've had them revving at equal speed to other fans and nothing is as quiet as them, short of some super duper no moving parts air ion channel shunter, which will eventually replace fans.

Noctua are my second favorite fan. They don't have quite the back pressure of the scythe fans, which are my favorite.

Check out Xigmatek's S1283. It performs about as well as a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme (in some benchmarks, better) and only costs about $30. It's also pretty small so is easy to get in/out of the case. Here's a bunch of benchmarks by frostytech that test heatsink performance: http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=2271&page=5

See Supra's post above. It is also the second listed/recommended heatsink if you follow the original link that I provided.
