Newbie wanting help with San Pedro
    #9679136 - 01/25/09 08:09 PM (15 years, 2 months ago)

Just ordered a 12" Rooted San Pedro Cactus and two things of potting soil from [] and a 12cutting from What is going to be the difference in potting the 12 cutting vs. the 12 rooted cactus?  The rooted just means that you get the roots with it is that correct?  If Im not mistaking I need to wait till the 12 cutting has a "woody" end than plant it.  The 12 rooted cactus think I should plant it right away, does this sound right.  Thanks for all the help.

Pedro San Man

Edit out the vendors. C'mon man read the rules. And if the cacti is not calloused over when you get it, I would complain about it. Rooted cacti can be planted right away. Wait about 7-10 days before watering though.

Why is this?  i've recently obtained a few, but they were fresh cut.

cause on the why they might get infected with moulds and disease or simply rot...
once a callous is formed the cutting is less receptical to anything.

pedro san i'd go with what's cheaper since if you're ever expecting to harvest it you will have to wait a couple of years anyway so the difference between a rooted cutting or an unrooted one (lets say a month apart) are really minuscule in the end!

I think he ordered one of each? The rooted you can plant right away. The cutting you will either want to leave unpotted until root buds start to pop out, or put it in some well draining soil and hold off watering to make new roots look for water and to avoid rot.

Yes I ordered one of each.  Don't plan on harvesting just want a big cactus.  I ordered two because I didn't wanna pay shipping on just soil (order had to be so much for free shipping) so I bought another cactus only this time it was a rooted pedro.  Just was wondering what would be the difference in planting the two.

 Hey now, I'm trying to save the new guy from getting the warning.

Back on topic, vendors have an obligation to provide us with quality, ready to go, product. If they can't do that then fuck'em. I'll be damned if I get another soft, rotting, or rooting from the top cacti. Right uare? ::crankey:.
