I've got nothing against them. I have not once encountered one trying to put their beliefs on me. And the ones I interact with on a daily basis are the most level headed and happy people I know.
I felt the urge to post this because I just sense so much anger and hatred for religious folk, specifically Christians around The Shroomery. And for a culture that seems to be vying as the voice for equality and non-hatred, I sure see a lot of dialogue around here that screams in the other direction when it comes to discussions about religion.

People here tend to think outside the box. Religion is an attempt to keep your mind inside a box so that you'll do what you're told. That's why people here are resistant to it.

I have a problem with the ones like these... (from an episode of trading spouses where a christian stays with new agers and thinks they are "dark sided")
or the jesus camp / evangelical folk.
The rest are chill

i live in a pretty redneck area when im not at school. religion is a real big part of the community around here, which is maybe why im not into it. the majority of "christians" i know are also some of the biggest hypocrites. On the other hand, theres a small handful that are the hardest working, most honest people in the world.
I'm with you on the anger and hatred part, how much bloodshed has this world seen due to religious intolerance?
someone said this here and i believe it whole heartedly: "Science does a better job of explaining God, and does it with less violence."
just my two cents, peace

People like to band together in like-minded groups. It feels good to have enemies who are "wrong" and to have allies whom you share allegiances and ideas with. It gives people a sense of belonging and makes them feel enlightened and righteous and gives a shape to their lives. Oftentimes when having these beliefs the true goal is not to learn or to better one's self; it is to follow something and to indulge in one's own vanity. Christians and atheists both fall prey to this.
I'm not a fan of religion at all and I criticize it all of them time. But, the shrill religion-bashers are just as close-minded and stupid as the nutso Christians. And there are plenty of the first type on this site. These rabid Left-wingers fail to realize and admit what they are; close-minded bigots who are just as robotic and dumb as the Right-wingers. They are both cut from the same cloth and they can both take a flying leap into hell for all I care.

Today i read a Christan pamphlet with stories in them.....It dedicated an entire section to why homosexuals are wrong and how little children who are "Bi Curious" should be repressing the feelings they feel
Really fucking sad, Christan's share something amazing.....but allot of them piss on the great aspect of their religion. For those of you who hate Christians check out "Universalism". Its a form of Christianity that agrees we will all be "with god" someday, and that no one will suffer for eternity. Its an open minded sect that seems pretty cool. They embrace the idea that not any 1 religion is perfect, and that other religions that promote love and peace should be looked into.

There is a difference between spirituality and religion. The last 3 are spiritual people; no matter what faith/lack of faith they were they would be loved and honored.

Right, but they are spiritual Christians, whereas the previous 3 examples are of pathological Christianity.

That is true. I think every religion includes elements of spirituality and militarism. Islam has some beautiful facets, like the eid feast in which you are supposed to share with the poor, but we often think of it in the militant sense. Likewise, even Buddhism has militant sects.
Maybe outsiders just see the negatives ?

It really warms my heart to see that picture of the spiritual MLK Jr. and remember how he cheated on his wife and plagiarized his dissertation.

I believe the resentment on these boards towards christians is due to the fact that overall christianity has a negative impact on society resulting in death and destruction. It does send some positive energy into our world but really nothing in comparison to the negative. Also the fact that the religion is known for pushing its beliefs onto other people adds to the hatred. I just dislike the majority that i meet and yes I will admit I will instantly think different of someone the second they mention they are christian regardless of personality.

I wish there were more tolerant individuals such as yourself on this site. I am constantly being discriminated on this site just because I am a good Christian.

Umm...what? Examples please. And one weird nutbag here and there does not amount to a "vast negative impact".

Elitist and sanctimonious "progressive" trash is just as bad as any Christian proselytizer I've ever seen.

Happened a thousand years ago. Please give current and relevant examples.
I'm not saying that Christianity has a spotless history (the Crusades, the Inquisition, Salem witch trials, etc..), but I don't see many violent spasms in today's Christianity.
Present-day Islam on the other hand....
