Fungi collected by Darwin in new centre of mycology [UK]

Fungi collected by Darwin in new centre of mycology
The study of mushrooms will receive a much-needed boost with one of the world's largest collections of fungi to be set up in England containing more than one million specimens - including samples collected by Darwin

Mycology is important to medicine and technology but the number of experts practising in Britain has fallen from 32 in the 1990s to just eight.

To address the shortage the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew are to merge with other organisations to create a leading centre for study. The collection will include samples collected by Charles Darwin and a specimen of Sir Alexander Flemings's penicillin-producing culture that changed the face of medicine.

There are already 800,000 specimens of mushrooms, puffball, toadstools and micro-fungi kept in the Jodrell Laboratory at Kew, including the specimens collected by Charles Darwin. Some 400,000 collection from the CABI research institute will be added, including a specimen of Sir Alexander Fleming's penicillin producing culture, 138 specimens of the potato blight organism and the key reference sample of the Dutch elm disease that changed the face of the English landscape in the 1970s.

Two senior research scientists from CABI will also join RBG Kew's mycology team, increasing the number of senior scientists at Kew who are experts in fungal taxonomy and systematics to five.

The Government is supporting the merger with a grant of £250,000.

Professor Mark Chase, Keeper of the Jodrell Laboratory at RBG Kew, said the new centre was essential to a number of scientific studies.

"Fungi are present in every type of habitat throughout the world and are essential for many plants to grow. For the wellbeing of the planet it is absolutely vital that we keep taxonomic skills and expertise in mycology alive in the UK.

"If we do not understand the world of fungi, then our ability to repair and restore damaged habitats is considerably reduced. There is also great potential in mycology for environmentally friendly biofuels if we can understand and harness the chemicals some fungi produce to decay plant materials."

A report on the decline of mycology by the Fungus Conservation Forum (FCF) is calling for more funding and apprenticeships to be set up in order to encourage more young scientists into the field.

I don't know if this is the right forum (hopefully its okay) but how does someone go about becoming a Mycologist? I'm in the UK and have looked at some of the courses that Universities here offer but there seem to be none that are focused entirley on Mycology. Some courses in Biology cover it occasionally though.

I'm not a mycologist or in the UK, but I would suggest contacting the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew from the article, The British Mycological Society, and talk to the members of your local mushroom/fungus group. I'm sure any of them could steer you in the right direction.
