I was thinking about starting a mushroom farm as a career when i get out of the army. How hard is it to get started? Where do you sell them? What are some good ones to start off on/ what equipment will i need? Any info is appreciated,(is it even possible to make decent living?) can't find much info on starting out on google. Also gonna use that GI bill for college, What classes would be beneficial? (Ag,ect..)

I don't have any answers for you, but I was thinking of growing some edibles and selling them at my local farmers market/produce stand.
I'd say locally grown organic edibles can fetch a decent price.

Well if you're a mycologist you could most likely make a great living doing this. You probably couldn't. Build a lot of FC. I was thinking of using an old grocery store fridge with a heating element and a thermometer hooked up to a switch. Set it to the temp you want it do be at and you're good.

Get some lab time in a microbiological lab. Learning the basics of microbiology will include preparing and pouring agar, working with an autoclave, isolation procedures etc ... all very handy

I'd say that it'd be a decent way of making some money. Maybe this should be moved to the Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms forum, as I believe those are what you intend to grow. You have to be aware that if you want to do this as a business there are a few investments involved. You'll need more than a normal pressure cooker and you'll need a professional laminar flowhood and lab equipment, environmental controls, incubation room (not a box, a room full of shelves) and the fruiting chamber is going to be large, too, so you'll need a property and space. Between $5000-$10000 to get you started will be required, I believe.

Don't dump the idea just because some folks are calling you a n00b. It can be learned and if you are into mushrooms and devote some time to it, it's not impossible at all. A bit of crafty skills and some logical thinking and anyone can grow mushrooms.

Thanks for the price estiment, another thing i was looking for. I know I'll need more than a pressure cooker thinking i'll need a little extra property, Greenhouses and such. So where do you go about selling them? I assume they have to be checked out or something by someone qualified before they can be sold?

No no no not dumping the idea. Just gonna be hard to get started if i go through with it.(investment like you said). I've had pretty good success with the pf tek and bulk growing Psilocybes, never grown edibles though. Especially bulk i'd intend on selling.

IN the usa there really is no mycological review board. Shitty I know, jsut start networknig talk to people who own restaurants and if you are serious about it try to get certified organic. Then you can sell to health food stores or maybe even make your own mushroom complex for immune system support

No certification needed unless you plan on becoming a commercial farm and decided to get certified organic. Then there will be tons of red tape to go through.

Over here Shittake mushrooms sell for a fortune. There is also a growing Chinese population and a number of Chinese restaurants with Shittake on the menu. I've been having similar ideas to yours. Do you not need some kind of farming license? Health and safety certification and what not? Might be worth checking out the laws before investing alot of time and money. Also try to get an idea of the potential profits and demand for your product first. Let us know if anything comes up, I'm interested to know.

Well as long as you're just selling locally who cares? I mean would you tell the feds if you sold a friend a carrot you grew in your backyard?

Well, if you intend to do it professionally you might as well ask if any restriction apply. It would be very unpleasant if the authorities shut down your business one day for the lack of a license. And "I didn't know" isn't an excuse the authorities accept.
