Some crazy ass pans

Habitat: Fields that were at one time grazed by horses. They seem to really like the moss seen in the pictures. They grow in groups usually, but not cespitose (I don't think any were anyway). I found them in three different areas, 30-40 miles apart, however the same kind of moss was present in all three spots, and the fields were very exposed, drying quickly after rain. In one field, where most of these pics are from, there were thousands of the things. It had been very wet for weeks before. Usually this field is cracker dry, as it gets tons of wind, and is exposed.
Gills: black, some mottled, some hanging below cap margin, attached.
Stem: tiny, .5"-1.5" long, tough, reddish, with faint white fibrils.
Cap: tiny, .25"-1". The biggest may have gotten up to 1.5 to 2 inches wide but those were rare. You can see in the pictures, banded margins, hygrophaneous, bell shaped, a few had become almost plain.
Spore print color: black
Bruising: none
Other information: I forgot about these until waxingren posted those pans from his flower pot.
At first I thought they were subbs, but I'm positive they arn't. Too small, don't look close enough, and different habitat. I guess there's a chance these are Psathyrella, but I don't think so. Despite their size they arn't very fragile like most psaths. I'm guessing Panaeolus, but I don't know what kind they could be. If anyone with a scope wants to look at them let me know.
I would have taken more and better pictures but it was fucking cold, and windy, and we were hiking in to a little creek, to fish.
here's the field, almost endless, and doesn't look particularly mushroomy, but it was loaded with these guys.
down the canyon and to the creek
Sorry for the detour, I got excited about the creek.
From another location:
Thanks

From the looks I agree. But the habitat is wrong. There is no dung and these fields don't look as if they are being manured, either.

Landsnorkler said growing in fields that horses one time grazed, what do horses do after they graze... ...so is it possible that these are just subbs?
Ive found subbs in pastures that had not had horses in them for almost a decade.

Ah, ok. I must have missed that part of his post. The close-up shots of the ground DO look like it would be suited. If the right nutrients are still present... why not?

they don't look like subb to me but make a tea will all of then and take a few sip , i know tea of panaeolus is not tasty , but give a try , by the way it look like the spring is on his way:)
this winter was not so cold i have the felling all the season are accommodating to a new change. slight but perceptible.so wait for a early spring and so on.

I wish I could say the same thing. Our current weather is coming straight from Siberia. It's between -15° and -28° Celsius here. A few more months to go before I can start spreading the mycolove outside with the spawn I am going to begin making soon...

These were found last may, which is a little earlier than I usually start finding subbs. Sorry for the confusion Cactu.
Yeah, it's hard to explain why I don't think they're subbs. For one, they were all tiny, much smaller than most subbs I find. But we all know subbs are a variable species, and for example, lawn inhabiting subbs are usually more slender than compost pile subbs. Environmental conditions in the fields where my collections were made could be what causes them to stay so petite, with the high winds and very short period where the fields are wet enough to support mushroom growth.
Another reason is that I found none growing cespitosely. Most patches of true subbs I find show cespitose growth. Out of the thousands of these that I saw non were growing cespitosely.
And habitat of course. Seems like an odd habitat. Yeah the soil could have been fertilized with horse manure, but it seems odd to me that all the patches of these guys were growing with that moss. The moss near the patches generally seemed dead or dying too, which leads me to believe maybe these guys are decomposing and feeding on this moss, but that's just speculation.
These mushrooms could be subbs, but something tells me they're not. It's probably gonna be a bitch to id them down to species as I've never tried this with a microscope with Panaeolus. There's so many similar species clustered around subbalteatus it would be fun to start sorting them out. Hopefully they turn out to be an "interesting" Panaeolus species other than subbalteatus, but if they are subbs, oh well, I now know where to find a shit load of them.:)
I should have access to a microscope next week once school starts up, and I should have enough of these guys for a bioassay, so I'll keep everyone posted on this!

Cool finds.
I'd also look into gold panning once in a while out there.
Could find a nice little placer deposit that you can work for a few extra thousand bones!
If you've never tried it, and do find some. Just make sure to hook a brother up if you find some nice nuggets!!
Good luck to ya.

Great finds! I found some subbs that looked exactly like those in a horse field, at least I thought they were subbs. Only this horse field subbs looked this way not any of the other horse places around the area. They were active for sure though. Ill post pics tomorrow
