I was just curious if you guys had any preference on the particle size of vermiculite used in bulk substrates. I would also like to know what percentage or part vermiculite you use in your bulk substrates.
Dunk and roll - fine grained verm Casing - medium grained verm Bulk substrates - large or medium grained verm i usually use 20% vermiculite in my bulk substrates, but next time around I am going to try one with 50% and another one with 75% and another with all verm soaked in the castoff water from a poo based sub. I was curious if anyone had done an all verm grow soaked in nutes.
Above is what i usually go with.

I use the medium/fine grade sold in hydro shops in 3 cubic feet bags for everything.
Up to 50% verm in bulk substrates gives a lot of bang. I wouldn't recommend soaking verm in nutrient solution since it's more likely to contaminate with molds before the mushroom mycelium can get a hold on it. Just mix it with manure or coir and coffee grinds. RR

Have you tried the larger grain verm?

I like fine for the dunk and roll as well. In my mono tubs the medium to large grain verm seems to not compact as much.

The course is fine for mixing with bulk substrates and casing layers, but the fine works great for everything. Just remember if you use course verm in pf tek to reduce the water by ten percent because course verm doesn't hold as much moisture. RR

I always use fine when doing the cakes, I want as much water in there as possible. I guess this holds true with bulk too. My tubs dry out on occasion and I have to supplement with misting, maybe I should try the fine. Also, I don't pre-measure the water, I just mix the two, let it sat for a few minutes and add more verm or water until the consistency is right.
