This term is thrown about loosely here and in other forums. "You sir, are an asshole!" :mad:

Well, let's look at this. 'Are' in this case means 'equivalent to'. Is assholishness an inherent quality like being male or having red hair? No.

If it was 'true' then everyone coming into prolonged contact with such an individual would agree. This never happens. Never. So what are we left with?

Nothing but projection. That is all. The actual translation is something like, "I have allowed myself to feel hurt/slighted over something you said and thus I project onto you a comparison to something I find disgusting/distasteful."

Bottom line: No one is an asshole. The name-caller is only make a statement about his/her own level of maturity. That is all.

I think there are certain people whom only a mother would love, but more to the point there are also people that the majority despise. Surely these would count as assholes by any common definition?

There is MLK day but no Hitler day. History will decide if a person was an asshole or not by declaring holidays.

One's capacity to be emotionally affected by an asshole does not change the fact that they are an asshole. Keith Olberman is an asshole who I often agree with, so I don't get offended by him. But I still see why others don't like him, and agree that he is, in fact, an asshole.
