Bulk Trays Not Pinning "Correctly" , Solutions?
    #9508150 - 12/28/08 04:34 PM (15 years, 3 months ago)

Ok, so...

I have 3 Trays going at the moment. 1 EQ 1 Alacabenzi and 1 Burma/EQ Mix

The trays were Rye Berries spawned to coir/verm/coffee.
Cased @ full colonization with Peat/Verm/Hydrated Lime (PH reg)

Trays are currently in FC and have been for about 4 days (Shotgun FC) with correct lighting spectrum on a 24/7 Light Cycle.

Fanning 3 times a day.

To be honest, the trays look bitchin they are starting to bust through the casing layer and I THINK they might just be consolidating it's hold on the sub. But, 4 nice size pins have come up with no apparent knotting what so ever. Why the terrible pin set?

On all my tubs, one or two pins came up first, then the next day a bunch more, then the next day a few more.  That's multispore for ya!

Did you say your light cycle is 24/7 ??

First off it should be 12/12 light cycle, also what kind of fruiting chamber are you using ?? What is your room temp ?? What is your humidity ??

Well the substrate is cased.

humidity is 90%
Shotgun FC
70 degree room temp

24/7 light cycle is not good? I thought light was only there to initiate pinning?

i dont know if this holds true, but usually imitating nature in one way or another benefits most growable things.

thank God we dont have to be in the sun 24/7

hell there would be no 24, there would be no 7

The mushrooms need rest! They do most of their growing at dark. The light is not just for pinning. Nobody knows exactly how or what for they use light, but they do.

Why did you mix a tray?  Most likely, either the Burma or the EQ will fruit, but probably not both. Which ever one that does fruit, would have wasted a large amount of energy; a small flush will most likely be the result

How so?
Please no more of the "different strains will fight each other" crap...

What happens?  Isn't one strain winning out possibility? Or is it a foregone conclusion that both will fruit?  Not being a smart ass, I just don't know.  I had always read that most likely one will win out and the result is a stressed flush.  Or both fruit, also resulting in a poor flush>

I just read this post by RR
Nonesense. Strains do not fight, and they do not compete for nutes. When you inoculate with multispore, you get hundreds, sometimes thousands of strains. Remember, a strain is a dikaryotic pairing of hyphae from two compatible spores. It doesn't matter one whit if they came from different so-called 'named' strains any more than if a chinese and an african human mate. The genes mix, they don't fight. The process of anastomosis will generally combine the mycelium into a single network by the time of full colonization.

Do a few searches along these lines and you guys will find several recent grows where people did just this and got normal results. I've done it myself many times. There is no more difference in the genetic ability to combine hyphae from spores on the same print than if you mix those spores with a print from the other side of the world. Remember, it's the same species.

An even more interesting RR post

I seriously doubt you'll notice any difference. A multispore inoculation results in thousands of strains. It really doesn't matter if some of those come from different prints with different names or not, since they're the same species. Of topic sort of, but one of my best pinsets ever was when I deliberately mixed pans and cubes in the same jar. Not just the same tray, but two different species in the very same grain jar. Even shook the jar twice to mix them all up, and when it pinned, there were pan areas and cube areas, but EVERY square inch of the casing had half a dozen pins of one kind or the other.

I've just found the old adage of 'they'll fight with each other' to be incorrect.

Correct. RR was the reason I chose to fruit 2 "Strains" in 1 tray. It's mostly for my own scientific purposes.

Anyway, I killed the light. I've never tried a 24/7 lighting cycle before, maybe that is my problem.

But, I dont see how kill the light will induce pinning and Hyphal Knotting.
