Fort Bend Drug Agents Seize 18-wheeler Loaded With Marijuana, Cocaine

Drug agents on U.S. 59 outside Richmond seized an 18-wheeler loaded with more than 3,300 pounds of marijuana and arrested the driver.

Members of the Fort Bend County Narcotics Task Force said their investigation indicates Guadalupe Perales, 32, of Mercedes, "was a drug smuggler employed by an organization based in Mexico."

Perales was charged with possession of more than 2,000 pounds of marijuana, and also possession of more than 200 grams of a controlled substance. The latter charge came after agents found more than 200 grams of cocaine hidden in truck tractor. Total bond was set at $160,000.

According to a statement by the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office, their Highway Criminal Interdiction investigators began an investigation Wednesday "on a tractor-trailer near the intersection of U.S. 59 and FM 762" near Richmond.

Apparently the same day, HCI investigators stopped the 18-wheeler as it was traveling south on U.S. 59. Perales was driving, and had no passengers, the sheriff's office said.

Drug agents with the county task force then searched the vehicle "and discovered approximately 3,348 pounds of marijuana and over 200 grams of cocaine."

Agents said the marijuana had been "cleverly hidden in specially designed containers" in the trailer.

The tractor-trailer and the drugs were seized by the drug agents under provisions of Chapter 59 of the Texas Criminal Code.

They estimated the wholsesale value of the marijuana at $2 million.

The driver must have done something stupid to attract attention-- police don't usually stop and search a commercial vehicle without a damn good reason or probable cause.

right, and how often do you see a semi-truck stopped with cops searching the cargo??  NEVER!!  they cannot do it without a warrant or SERIOUS probable cause.

Actually on a highway i travel on 3 days a week, during the summer time the five oh set up in the exact same spot, with marked cars, undercover cars, and a police RV (a big one, the ones with the sides that are motorized and it all comes out to be like twice the size it was). They never stop cars, only the big rigs. Everytime i go past they have the lights going and multiple trucks lined up. Its a damn shame.

Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol - or THC, the active chemical in weed - is in the same family of organic molecules as anandamide, a chemical found in the human brain that is associated with feelings of bliss such as those released during sex. So on a molecular level, getting laid and getting stoned aren't too different.

yeah- that's the DOT, they can do that and most of the time they are only checking required equipment, permits/licenses, and axle-weights.  If everything is in order then there's no trouble. the DOT can ask at any time to see your cargo but usually will only do so if they have probable cause to believe that something is not right.  The DOT can also legally demand a breathalyzer or a urine test ON THE SPOT of a commercially licensed driver.  In the Southern states they will walk dogs front to back beside the trailer and underneath to scent for contraband or people smuggling in the truck.  Once you are in the mid west and Northern states you don't see that level of concern which is why I say the idiot driving must've been twacked out of his/her gourd and probably was scared shitless and couldn't keep it together enough to escape suspicion.

what I mean is, inspections are commonplace for commercial rigs but SEARCHES are not.  In order to get your ass searched you have to either be fresh from Mehico or look obviously tweaked and guilty as hell
