You get it from not being sterile enough, either in your preparation of the casing material, or you environment is not sterile enough. Cobweb mold looks just like that, a cobweb, its much more "whispy" than mycelium, and it is grey in color, not white like mycelium. Go to the contamination forum to see pictures of cobweb mold.

I think it smell kinda like faint magic marker or new shoes, I guess I'm not very good at discribing smells, but it definitly has a smell different from mycelium. I don't know if shrooms will grow from it, cause usually whenever anything got cobweb mold, it would be transfered to an outdoor patch.

usually you will get the cobweb in casings and not in jars-

you will be able to tell the difference usually because cobweb is grey and not white

I'll just tack my query on to this thread instead of starting the 5000th thread on cobweb

Hmm, it can be tough for newbs like myself to differentiate between cobweb and mycellium.  I've been reading this forum for ages now and studying and collecting pics, and it seems that some cobweb *is* white.  Check the sticky topic (Contam FAQ) at the top of this forum for some examples.

I can't get syringes with needles over here, so I had to innoculate my jars with (don't laugh) an ear dropper, which I squirted some boiling water through to try and sterilise.  I knew this wouldn't be ideal, but have no alternative until I can get a syringe needle.

Anyway, one of my jars started to stink, and looked very gray, and when I lifted the foil (I have to use foil for a lid) I could see the cobweb growing right through my dry Verm layer!  So I chucked it into the back garden.  The rest of the jars, though, were looking more promising.  They had bright white spots on them, which have spread more now, but which are starting to look sort of furry and wispy.  So I now can't figure out if they're white cobweb mold, or rhyzomorphic mycellium!!

Some of this stuff is again growing through the dry verm layer.  Would mycellium do that?

I wish someone would finish off the contam FAQ, it would be very useful to have a lot of high-quality close-up images of mycellium and rhizomorphic mycellium to compare with the contam pics.

This is the pic that's making it harder for me to tell cobweb from mycellium!

That's kind of how my jars look now, but those little strands in the centre of the jar (i.e. at the far left of the mycellium) are kind of furry, whereas in this pic they seem to be ropey.

Any thoughts?  Am I growing shrooms, or mold?

That looks like good rizo growth. Not cobweb. Seldom do you ever see cobweb in a jar. It usualy occurs on - around cakes & casings.

It is wispy like thin spun cotton candy. Have you ever seen dog crap after a rain that began to get white/gray wispy hairy looking fuzz growing off it? That is what cobweb looks like.

It's crap you cannot get syringe needles. It would not be a great task to fabricate one out of tiny stainless steel tubing or tiny pipe. Even if it was larger bore than 19 or 20 gauge, it would be better than an eye dropper.

Sounds like you should get some millet based bird seed going & learn grain to grain transfers. You will have spawn running out the gazoo, once you learn that.

6T

I find cobweb also forms on the surface of the substrate first, atleast that`s how I spot it.

Also, you recommend g2g Six Tango, I`m constantly advertising honey water innocultaions over syringes and g2g.
You scrape your spores straight into the honey.
G2g fro isolation strains but honey water for multi-spore innocultaion.

Heyo
i had 3 horse poo casings
2 now have big fluffy cobweb on them
(FUCKING GOD DAMN SONOFABITCH)
sorrry.... had to get that out
i've heard ppl put them outside to fruit
are shrooms that come from cobweb infestation edible?
... i know the answer is probably no
has anyone eaten some and survived/not needed a liver transplant?
does the outside fix problems
or do i just have 2 meatloaf tins full of garbage?
... i'm holding out hope for my 3rd one, but those hopes are not very high

I have never had cobweb mold, but according to TMC, cobweb mold can be stopped by covering it with salt or baking soda. It makes a real mess of mushrooms but poses no danger to humans. So if the mushrooms look okay and are not rotten inside then you could eat them if you were deparate.

First time experience with cobweb mold on casing, (straight vermiculite). As soon as I saw it knew what it was. Very different than mycelium. Wispy looking. Spayed peroxide water mix and seemed to do the trick. Tried to take pic but this is the best I could get. Hope it helps a little.

cobweb itself is harmless to humans but it causes mushies to rot which can't be good.. but if the mushies aren't rotten then you should be okay eating them

anyone have recommended water/peroxide recipes? it looks like my friend has also grown some cobweb mold. i think there are different strengths of peroxide (H2O2), so if anyone has specifics, please post here. is it possible to use too much peroxide in the water?

1 portion of 3% h2o2 to aprox. 10 portions of water.
