Extrmely simple Fridge Incubator tek
    #9473233 - 12/21/08 02:54 PM (15 years, 3 months ago)

Hi all,

I have not been posting here for a very long time, however I recently came up with an idea of a very simple fridge incubator setup and it may be useful to others.

You just empty and clean a fridge, unplug it from the socket, put an electric iron inside and set it to the desired temperature. This is all.

How it works:

The iron has it's own thermostat and it is designed to heat very fast. To maintain the needed 27C or so it needs to be set near the minimum setting and this way it turns itself on for about 5 seconds every 15 minutes or so. The heating plate is thick and has a large surface area, so it heats the fridge very efficiently. Just don't put the iron on a plastic shelf - a glass shelf is ideal. I just close the door over the power cord. It works like a charm.

Here is a picture:

Take care!

Points for creativity, but I don't think that's the safest long term solution out there. Might be better with a reptile heating mat or something else meant to be left on and unattended for long periods of time.

It is ideal for long term use, you can leave it alone after you fine tune it to the desired temperature. It will maintain it easily. It is completely maintenance free. I have seen no flaws so far and I don't expect to see any.

imo using a aquariam heater with the glass and coil removed so all you have is the thermostat, then wiring in a light bulb to it would be safer

Just knocked up some LCs and grain jars a few days ago... Suddenly it's fall out and the temp is dropping rapidly in my house. Gonna look into turning a cooler or two into incubators but I have a spare fridge lyin around so this might just save my ass..... If I can find an iron (broke nigga status) lol good lookin out dude.
