Stunted Myc Growth, Suggestions/Comments.
    #9472782 - 12/21/08 01:27 PM (15 years, 3 months ago)

Alright, heres the facts:

Spores where injected into BRF Cakes November 28th in a glovebox that was placed into a well sterilized room. Incubated between 70-78 f with two nights having a temp drop to 65.

Dec 2nd, Myc spots formed on all 10 inoculated jars.

Dec 8th I noticed that the Myc development had slowed down a little, so I loosened lids a tad, growth continued in 1/2 of the jars.

Since then, the jars have just been... Crawling along, except for one jar that ROCKETED and has covered almost 1/2 of the cake while all others are very stunted.

Last night I flipped the jars, and place them on their sides today.

I also, noticed what looked like wet spots on the inside of the jar around the myc started developing but it hasnt gotten any bigger.  The jars smell to me like Brown rice/leaves/mushrooms but my GF hates the smell.

So basically I am asking should I:
-Try and salvage the best jars myc by transfering it to a Liquid Culture?
-Leave it alone for another week.
-Put a little bit of H202 in there.
-Turf it, its no good.  Try again next time.

If the 'wet spots' developed after your sterilized your jars, you could have a bacterial contamination.

Dumping in H202 will cause a lot more problems than it would even begin to solve.

Did you put holes in the lids of the jars and do you have a vermiculite barrier?

there are 4 holes in the lid, with tyvek ontop of the lid, then the ring on the jar.

Yes there is a verm barrier.

The wet spots Have not gotten bigger since I noticed them, (early december)

For future reference, you don't need the tyvek if you have a vermiculite barrier. Dry vermiculite works just fine on its own.

It's possible the tyvek is hampering gas exchange if it's too thick in conjunction with the vermiculite. Ordinarily, I wouldn't say that's a problem, but it's a shot in the dark here because you seem to have done everything else right.

Personally, I would take off the tyvek and give your jars another week before starting over.

This is also assuming that you got your moisture content right when you mixed up your BRF Mix. I cut my teeth on 'The PF Tek for Simple Minds' and RR's PF Tek Videos (they're posed on mushroomvideos.com) when I first started cultivating and it worked perfect for me.

so should I remove the tyvek, and put some microspore tape on the holes?

Remove the tyvek but don't bother taping holes. The dry verm is your filter.

Sounds to me like a bacterial contam. as Brennus said, loosen your lids a little bit and take a whiff if you smell fermentation like sour apples then toss em and try again. good luck.

Just wanted to maybe get at least one cap for genetics, you know?
