Flammulina velutipes?
    #9455650 - 12/18/08 11:44 AM (15 years, 3 months ago)

Hello, fellow shroomers,
I apologize upfront for the picture non-quality. Unfortunately I only have my uber-crappy cell phone camera at the moment. I will post real pictures in the evening.

I found this duo of mushrooms growing out of a small burrow at the base of a decayed stump. I suspect it is from a broad-leaf tree, but if it too decayed to say for sure. Same tree had a small Pleurotus ostreatus growing on it. This was in a mixed forest near Washington DC.
I have a strong suspicion that this is Velvet foot, but want to make sure.

Gills:
White, Adnexed to Emarginate, attached.

Stem:
4.5" long (keep in mind it was growing out of a burrow, so probably longer then usual), 1/4" diameter, creamy-white at the cap and dark-brown (almost black) and furry at the base. Fairly stringy and hollow.

Cap:
1.5" and 2" in Diameter, color: brow, lighter at the edge. Sticky surface, convex.

Spore print color: too early to tell, but probably white.

Bruising: none.

Scent: almost none, very light fruity.

And the crappy pictures:

My coworker graciously allowed me to use his camera:
