A dozen wild shrooms for identification...
    #944294 - 10/08/02 11:15 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Hello all

this is the first set of shrooms that my dad collected from the area where we have the house in the mountains.

Pics are terrible, sorry, camera's fault.

few words in advance:

C : is weird, has no gills at all !! possibly contaminated of some sort. it was standing with the no-gills up and the cap towards the earth... weird.
J : looks like a pleurotus style but was found on earth.
K : was found on a tree

Lets see how many we can identify:
first two pics show both sides of shrooms

details:

the gill-less shroom had a weird-bad smell, probably contaminated, and the inside was deep-brown-black. cant upload other pic, day limit... i will tomorrow

Anno, pleaz, dont shout at me!

i know that i should have many many more details. if u take a look at my other identification threads, you will see that i included spore prints etc.

now, this thread and the next one is impossible to send so many details. sorry, i know its not correct, lets see what we can get up to here. just a clue. maybe there is a weird or rare shroom so i will try to find a new healthy specimen.

thanx

You should get in the habit of automatically making spore prints for any mushroom you don't know the spore color for.

A. Amanita sp. - you didn't get the volva, so we can't ID to species
B. Cortinarius sp.? - need a spore print, at least
C. Helvella sulcata, a False Morel (unknown edibility, do not eat)
D. Hypomyces chlorinigenus, a parasite on boletes (inedible) in asexual stage
E. Inocybe sp.? - need a spore print, and more detail in photo
F. Tricholoma sp.? - need a spore print
G. ? - I can't tell what color the gills are - need a spore print
H. Clitocybe sp. - does this one have an odor?
I. ? - need a spore print
J. Lichen?
K. ? - does it have gills, tubes? also, get a spore print on this one
L. Clitocybe sp.? - are the gills white? please get a spore print

Those are mostly very rough guesses.

Happy mushrooming!

Hypomyces is a genus of parasitic fungi which grow on the fruiting bodies of other fungi. First they go through a moldlike, asexual stage (molds are asexual fungi). When they mature they become somewhat crustlike on the outside of the mushroom and become sexual. The spores are produced inside of long narrow cells (called asca) inside of flask shaped structures (called perithecia).

As far as I know, the only edible Hypomyces is H. lactifluorum, which is orange and grows on Russulas (especially R. brevipes). They are called Lobster Mushrooms, and you can sometimes buy them in specialty stores.

Hypomyces chlorinigenus specifically targets species of boletes, and your photo looks like it is still in the early asexual stage. When it matures it should become yellow to yellow-brown and somewhat like sandpaper in texture. Bessette lists it as inedible.

Hopefully that's what you wanted.

Happy mushrooming.
