Does anyone know of any good strategy oriented Muds(as opposed to rpgs)? Ones that are kinda like risk or warcraft in that you take over lands and build up resources?

what's a mud?
i've been playing this game called colonization. it's a turn-based strategy game that takes place during the exploration age. you set out from your home country and establish colonies in the new world... collecting and selling goods... eventually going to war or declaring your independence.
pretty fun.
warcraft is a real-time strategy.. maybe you'd like command and conquer or something like that?

Not really a strategy type game either.

Do people still play muds? I remember Abermud from long ago, but that was mid 80's.

Yes, many.
The one Shroomism mentioned is one he and I both used to play, and there are still close to a thousand people playing that one at any given time.

What makes a mud good? As I said, I remember the days of Abermud, which was a bit like Zork. What is great about the ones that people would pay money for compared to the free ones?

No idea. What type of muds are these? I was more into the godwars or RP muds.
