Math Question!
    #9439577 - 12/15/08 08:09 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

I've got a question for you math nerds out there...well math/physics nerds really.  It inovlves conceptually using the derivative.

I understand that, say, angular acceleration a=dw/dt, is the derivative of angular speed with respect to time.  What I don't understand is how to manipulate this notation.  What does dw=dt(a) mean?  If i got an answer for dw, what would that be telling me?  I'm just curious cause I've never quite figured it out.

Let me know if my question isn't clear.

edit: oh and when i say "a" i really mean alpha and w is...whatever greek letter looks like w hah

haha yeah I was trying to think whether to post this here or the pub, figured there might be more math nerds here.
.
I know this isn't really the correct forum but

Check up ordinary differential equations on wikipedia, then pick up an ODE book

Formula: 0 is telling you that for every infinitesimal change in time where an acceleration 'alpha' is being applied, you get an  infinitesimal change in angular velocity 'omega'.

Does that make sense?  Its basically telling you that an acceleration over a time changes the velocity, just like in linear motion.

Okay that makes sense.  So it's practically like a more powerful delta symbol (for change).

Yes.  The key difference between delta and differentials is delta is a finite measurable change, where the differentials are infinitesimal changes - that is infinitely small, smaller than any number you can imagine but bigger than zero.
