Recommend A Newbie A Pressure Cooker...

Hi,
I'm after a pressure cooker and am hoping to get some advice. I've done some research and I'm hoping to get one with a PSI gauge, and one which is 15PSI at least (but nothing higher). Is this okay so far? Is there anything else I need to look out for?
Also am I right in presuming that it would be best to go for a large pressure cooker, to save me having to upgrade later on down the line, so that I can do as many jars as possible in one go?
I've seen a few available on the Freecycle website and I'll have a look on ebay too, am based in the UK so I'm not sure if shipping would be too expensive for an american-based PC.
Thanks for any help

I would definitely recommend to you to get a large one. I started off with a small one (I think 8 or 10 quart), and it is a pain to have to pay close attention to the size of stuff that you put in there. For example, my PC is only tall enough to fit 1 quart sized jar. I can fit 7 half pint, and probably 3 full pint. and 1 spawn bag.
I have also been looking and I think I am going to go with either a 25 quart or 41 quart... It seems that you can get a 41 quart for a little over $200 on ebay.
I have been looking on freecycle also, but I have not been able to track down a large PC in my area. I also check the thrift store about once a week and have had no luck.

Get one that is at least 21 quarts. I highly recommend the All American 921. Really All Americans are this shit. They are pricey but bombproof and will last you a lifetime. 41 quart PCs are great and fucking huge. I just got my hands on an AA 941 and honestly unless you are doing ridiculous amounts of jars/bags then the 921 or 925 (they hold the same amount of quart jars(10) or bags(4)) is sufficient for the small home cultivator. I only use the 941 every once in a while while I use my 921 at least 3 times a week for various sterilizing jobs. Although if I were you, if the price is right I would totally spring for a 941. Got my 921 for $100 off ebay. Good luck!

Would anyone mind explaining the difference between a pressure cooker and a sterilizer? I noticed that the All American brand makes sterilizers and they are a bit more expensive than the regular PC.

The difference is that sterilizers have a removable inner container and rack and use a toggle valve. The pressure cookers have a little rack that goes in the bottom and use a pressure stone that has a 5psi 10psi and 15psi settings that will rock back and forth releasing pressure when it gets above whatever you have it set at. The pressure cookers work perfectly, and you can get an after market toggle valve to put on if you want to. They are nice because they make it so the PC won't looser water as it sterilizes.

Sterilizers are not meant for your purpose. You want at least the 30qt (14jar) capacity All American pressure cooker if you are serious about doing large amounts.

Thanks for the help.
I've been looking around in some of the UK shops and most of them seem to be marked up in litres - the biggest I've seen is 7 litre. Do I just divide the litre by 0.9463 to get the quart figure? So the 7 litre one would actually only be 7.4 quart?
Thanks for the help again

Yes sir. Also, for a future reference you can go to google and type into the search bar "7 liter to quart" and it calculates it for you.

Presto makes a 23 quart job that is right around $100. I googled them last night and found some on Amazon as well as some other places. I bought mine locally for $89.95. It will handle 7 qt jars at a time.

Thanks again for the help.
I've been looking on Amazon.co.uk and the biggest I've seen is again only around the 7 litre(6 quart) mark which is annoying
Also on Ebay.co.uk the biggest I've seen is around 8 litre, which is nothing like the 23 quarts that have been recommended...

Hi glenbelt,
My first pressure cooker, a 6 quart Presto with a 15 psi rocker valve, I still have and use, when doing small batches. It holds 5 pints or about 8 half pint jars. I have a larger cooker, but I use the smaller one more often. I cook agar in the 6 quart Presto in small plastic bottles, it is a lot easier than dragging the larger cooker out.
I sometimes use the 6 quart for cooking.
If I was to do it over a slightly larger pressure cooker, say 8 to 10 quarts would be more useful to me now, to have as a small pressure cooker.

good point. I guess it all just depends on what you plan on using it for.

Don't suppose anyone knows anywhere in the UK that sells large pressure cookers (above 7Litre?). Am hoping to use it for the PF TEK in one of the mushroom videos I've seen, also to use it to sterilize equipment.
Thanks again for the help

I'm not really sure! Your best bet may be an online retailer. You can find smaller pressure cookers at places that sell cookware, but the larger ones are mostly sold for canning purposes. I think I got my All American 921 off of Ebay.

I also got my AA 921 from ebay (its about 50 years old). But not to say that I didn't find a cheaper one with a rubber seal of the same size in a local hardware store. You can find them anywhere that has a decent selection of pots, pans and kitchen supplies.

0 results found for pressure canners (thats on ebay.co.uk) whereas there are about 120 on ebay.com
The pressure cookers on ebay.co.uk don't seem to be anywhere near the size of the ones on ebay.com as well.
Thanks for the help

Still haven't managed to find any large pressure cookers in the UK. Also noticed that on the All American website they only ship to USA/Canada
Surely there must be someplace in the UK that sells them?

Did you check the shipping costs for any North American based places with ebay.com/ebay.ca?
