Can you have too much humidity?
    #9380137 - 12/06/08 04:37 PM (15 years, 3 months ago)

Right now I have an ultrasonic and a coolmist hooked up to a large rubbermade container.  (I realize that this is overkill and the only reason I am using ultrasonic/coolmist is because I plan to set up a martha-type enclosure in a couple of months)

As of now, I have the coolmist running 24/7 and the ultrasonic running for 1 hour on, 1 hour off.  I have a little drain at the bottom of the container and it slowly drips water.  So my question is, am I pumping too much humidity into the fruiting chamber?  I have read that sitting water can cause problems, however I do not have any sitting water because it all drains out.

Also, should I adjust my ultrasonic timing?

If you have water dripping out that's too much. You should shoot for about 85-90% RH. There are inexpensive meters available for RH.
Too high RH promotes Trich (and other molds) growth.

You can by a cheap cigar-store hygrometer and calibrate it so that it will give you a good numerical indicator of your relative humidity. However, there are other signs you can watch out for - bad smells, mildew growth, etc. Eventually you will become adept at reading the mycelium, and seeing if it looks thirsty, or is over-humidified (mushrooms that start growing fuzzy mycelium on their stalks is a good sign your humidity is too high, as are large pools of water sitting on the mycelium's surface.)

is the container a Shotgun FC? with holes drilled in the bottom?
Puddles and such are breeding grounds for contaminants.

I don't have any experience growing mushrooms, but I think that the ideal room humidity for colonization is 85-90%, and for fruiting it's less, but i'm not sure.

If you're running the coolmist 24/7, I dont think you'd need the ultrasonic. but you should wait for a reply from someone with more experience :p

It is not a shotgun FC.  I have 3 vents near the bottom but that is about it... I guess I will just run the coolmist 24/7 and then the ultrasonic twice a day for a half hour (morning and night).

I actually have a hygrometer... how do I go about calibrating it?  I noticed a little screw on the back of it, but how do I know where to turn it?  I do remember reading that they are only accurate for a small range.

Hygrometers usually come pre-calibrated. What type do you have?
Do you have a reason to believe its inaccurate?

You need to re-calibrate it for a high-humidity environment. It is probably calibrated to be most accurate around 75% humidity. Get a tupperware dish, soak a dishtowel until it is soaking wet, then wring it out. Wrap the hygrometer with the towel, seal inside the tupperware dish for 20 minutes. Then remove the hygrometer and then turn the screw on the back until the needle is at 99%.
