air circulation in fruiting chamber
    #9336713 - 11/30/08 11:22 AM (15 years, 3 months ago)

hello all,

right now while my jars are colonizing and my fc is taking shape. I know I want to use some sort of automated air circulation to keep the air in my fc from becoming stagnant. I think that a couple computer case fans would be ideal for moving air around the chamber; however, I dont know the best way to go about powering the computer fans with an ac power source. I also believe that a small house fan would be overkill. The size of my fc is equivalent to a 100+ gallon aquarium. any input/info/insight is greatly appreciated!

the best

P.S.

You don't need air circulation inside the chamber as much as fresh air exchange.

That is, new air getting in, replacing the old air.

You need to get as many exchanges a day as possible without reducing your humidity.

Focus on getting good FAE as it is one of your most important factors.

Computer fans tend to run very well using a computer power supply. Also, 12V (almost all PC fans are 12) fans run a bit slowly using 9v batteries, but will get the job done.

If you really want to use an AC adapter, use a 12v 1a, cut the tip off, as well as the connector for the fan, and splice the wires together. electrical tape them. (I don't advise this, the battery method is much safer)

Natural circulation is far better than mechanical in small terrariums.  I'd suggest building a shotgun terrarium.

I was thinking you could use a small tub (mini-bulk style) with a cutout on each side. In the cutout would be a HEPA filter, then an electric fan moving fairly slowly, one pushing and one pulling.

This is just theoretical, but seems like it ought to work.

You've got to be careful, those tiny fans move a lot of air running 24/7. It could easily dry your stuff out unless it's timed or you're pumping in a lot of moisture.

I like automation, but have found it's not a simple fix.

After trying about a dozen different methods of automation, I'm beginning to believe RR's statement.

I've had some success with automated FAE. The problem is that a "tiny" 15-30 CFM PC fan will be delivering 900-1800 cubic feet of air per hour, which is way too much for a tub. A 15 minute timer could be used with the PC fans, but even then, you've got a largish hole in your terrarium which could dry things out all by itself.

If you run a small gauge tube from a cool mist (running dry) you can restrict your FAE to whatever level you like depending on the tube length and diameter. With air coming from a tube, it's fairly easy to get a good idea of what the FAE will be using a plastic bag and a stop watch.

I'm curious what types of automation you've tried. I'm currently working on a project, so any ideas for thought would be appreciated.
