Onions ok to compost?
    #9325140 - 11/27/08 11:51 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

Someone told me you shouldn't put onions in a compost. Any truth in that? I can't think why not.

the only things that shouldn't go into a home compost pile are meat/dairy, as they may attract unwanted pests, or putrefy and make for some nasty bacterial/mold colonies in the compost, as very high temperatures are needed to kill some of those pathogens

there is no reason i know of to not compost onions.

the only exception to the above is if you know whatever you are composting may release alleochemicals known to be harmful to specific plants the compost will be used to raise later; and that all depends on the internal temperatures the pile reaches

^All of the above...

You may want to make a miniature compost pile with onions aside from your regular pile to see what happens - then you will know for sure.

Onions are fine to compost, the only thing is worms probably don't like them much.
But like the guy above said, chop them up before throwing them in because they will try and grow
