trip toy

Well while going around the internet I came across this toy that apparently was popular with deadheads. It is also called a kaleidosky. Here's a picture of it:
Basically it works like this: If you've ever put pressure on your eyes while they're closed, you'll start to see very faint visuals. These are caused phosphenes, and they describe the phenomenon of seeing something without light actually reaching the eye. This toy is called a "solar phosphene generator", and what it is is a piece of plastic with two lenses on it, and a plastic disc inside with holes in it. You put your eyes up to the eyepiece and point the toy up to the sun whilst having your eyes closed, and blow on a tube attached to the toy. This causes the disk to spin, allowing sunlight to pass through the holes at alternating times and hit your eyelids, thus producing visuals.
I am looking into buying one, but I want to know if it is really as neat as people say it is. So, is it?

ebay
here you go
I saw the history of people purchasing this item, and somebody bought 10 on october 28th, so this guy probably actually manufactures them. they're not that expensive, about $25 when you include the shipping.
now I really want to know - has anybody actually had one of these and can tell me what sort of effect it produces? Thanks

oh, and to answer yer question:
I got 'conned' into buying a pair of X-ray specs once that turned out to be bogus (and by bogus I mean: "exactly what they said...and not what they implied")
shit like this often times sounds more interesting then it actually is

This would be a cool trip toy also. Anything shiny that spins can hold my attention for hours. Non-stop spinning top

Hb, i've seen that video, but i don't think that's the effect it produces. It's not literally a kaleidoscope. Nice try though.
fuck it, i'm getting one. If i regret it later, so what? $25 bucks wasted. I'll get over it . Plus there's a possibility that it could be actually awesome. I mean, in the article it says that when the guy was selling them during the Grateful Dead tour, he let people try them, and they were a big hit. He apparently sold over 60,000 or so in only a few years. Not bad considering it's just him and a couple other people distributing them. I'm gonna go with the numbers, and what people had to say about it on eBay.

I just got it today, and although there were a lot of clouds, the sun broke through at some point and i was able to use it.
I've gotta say, although I was kinda expecting some crappy bunk piece of garbage, It was the exact opposite. When I aimed the toy at the sun, I saw a bunch of colorful, cross-like shapes, and when I moved slightly away from the sun It changed to a red and blue pattern. It is really a lot like tripping, believe it or not.
I recommend it .
