Dunk cakes in fridge????
    #9272659 - 11/19/08 02:50 PM (15 years, 3 months ago)

Do you have to dunk in the fridge or can you dunk for 24 hours in room temp water? Is one better than the other?

After you dunk and roll, should you always spray your vermiculite to keep it moist through out the entire time it's in the fruiting chamber?

Do cool water in room temp. Fridge will stall the myc for a couple days.

Better than risking bacteria IMHO.

Your fridge is the nastiest place in your house. That means when you pull it out of the fridge if anything has gotten in the cakes then they have an extra few days to begin to germinate while the mushroom mycelium picks its growth back up.

hmm..I put mine in the fridge with a sealed pressure cooker and they where fine...I guess to be safe keep it cool outside of the fridge but if you have a sealable container the fridge is easier

No need to put in the fridge. Unless you live in a tropical area...

Cold tap water in room temperature is fine.

I've noticed when dunking in the fridge it takes longer for the mycelium to recover from dunking, and there's really no advantage in doing it.

I thought it reduced the chance of contams getting on the cakes

If you keep it sealed in a PC then yea. But it isn't any cleaner in a fridge, and it slows down your mushroom mycelium growth.

elevated is right. water at room temp begins to get bacteria building up in just a few hours.keeping them in the fridge will slow bacteria build up considerably. i dunk them in the jars they colonized in with the holes in the lids without ever a contam problem.

Which is not the best idea.  The cakes need to expand as they hydrate, and once the substrate is tight against the glass, it stops absorbing water.  It's best to birth, then rinse and dunk, then rinse again and roll in dry verm.

We used to recommend dunking in the refrigerator for the reason of keeping bacteria in check, but have since found it's not necessary.  If you live in an extremely hot climate, use the refrigerator, or change the dunk water every few hours, the latter being preferable.

Which is why I sealed the dunk tank
And, Texas is hot enough
