Same strain diff genetics...
    #9271503 - 11/19/08 09:43 AM (15 years, 4 months ago)

Recently I've fruited a few pf cakes...Some where innoced. by multispore B+ (New spores)...some innoced. by multispore B+ (very old...2 years in the syringe sitting @ roomtemp in the dark.)  The (new spore) cakes produced/are producing very skinny mushies with an abundant amount of pins/mushies on the cake...the (old spore) cakes are producing very fat stem/fat cap mushies with very few of them on the cake (4-5) compared to about 30 on the new ones...Which ones most likely have stronger genetics/ would you prefer?  Fat and heavy with only a few of them or long and skinny with a lot of them?

I like em fat n heavy, skinny buggers tend to string out when dried. Personal preference!

Potency is entirely random. Your best bet is to try and figure out which flush was most potent and isolate a fruit from that batch.

I've already made an LC clone solution of a nice tall fruit from one of the new spore cakes...Perhaps I'll prepare one for a the OS cakes too...

Picture this in your mind: Spores germinate and a thread like apendage called a hyphae extends from each spore that is viable. These hyphae cross (mate) and share dna. Each mating is called a substrain. These substrains have different traits (phenotypes)-ie: potency, size, colonization speed, ect. Some of these substrains are nonfruiting. If you have more potent substrains then your fruits will be potent. if you have more weak substrains they will dilude the strong ones\become dominate, and the fruits maynot be potent. This process holds true for other traits as well like cap size, stem thickness, pinset, ect. So it is luck of the draw how a multispore inoculation turns out.

Fat and heavy always.  Who the hell wants to clean and dry hundreds of toothpick size fruits.. HATE that!

May want to hang on to those older spores!

the point i was trying to make was : he could use the older spores and end up with small fruits on a later grow due to variation in multispore grows. but it is possible someone has grown the older spore line over generations for the larger fruits, by takeing prints each grow from the largest fruits : thus increseing the genetics in the direction of large fruits, decreseing variation.

Is it possible over the two years the spores sat in the syringe that the spores degenerated at all?  Or maybe weak ones didn't remain in tact?

"weak"  nah man you just got dominate genetics for large fruits once the mycelium was fully colonized. the genetics for smaller fruits were overpowered so to speak.
