VPN/VNC is also very nice- you install the client on the computer(s) to be accessed, and you can log in and use them real-time from another location

i found a full version of that program ill try it out

- pretty much i just want to be able to run my files that i have on my home network, with any internet connection..

for instance if i had my lappy at a coffee shop - i want to be able to grab a file from home using the coffee shops wifi

hopefully this program is fairly retard proof because i not too saavy when it comes to networking.

with the google research ive done i heard that you need a special router

- im sure there has to be a simplified way on the software side

You don't want to do it on public networks using ANY method then. If you want to use public networks, but access private data then you'd want to use encrypted tunnels. Your easiest choice would most likely be a VPN. Also, when you are at a coffee shop or something never ever use a "normal" connection. They make great distributions that create anonymous, scrubbed, and encrypted traffic.

The best distro for a coffee shop type of setting is Anonym|OS.

Just google it, download, burn to cd, boot with it, surf anonymously and privately.

Good Luck.

Oh and you don't need a special router or software. Your current router just needs to be configured properly and your operating systems should provide the ability to do VPN connections.

Again, good luck!

usually more of a pain in the ass to configure windows for vpn vs using a simple small proggy. imo

OpenVPN on a cheap-ass GNU/Linux box works well too.

If you just want read-only access, as you described, then you could run a web server on your computer. The advantage is you don't need special VPN software on the other end of the connection.

Yes you can but there will come a time when you say "Fuck, I wish I could copy this to my home machine."

Just run an SFTP server and you're done if all you want to do is upload/download files.

If you want to be able to actually view your desktop like you're sitting in front of it then VPN and MSTSC (Remote Desktop) will be the likely candidates. I wouldn't just allow Remote Desktop because I'm not sure if it uses encryption, and knowing Microsoft, it's probably exploitable.

You can do both as well, one for transferring stuff, and the other for viewing your machine and transferring stuff.

Yes, easily. Go to add/remove programs in control panel, then add/remove windows components, and from there you can select Internet Information Services. There's a web server and an FTP server, so you can upload files back to your computer, as mushroomhunter said.

The built-in web and FTP servers aren't very good, but they'll be fine for what you need. There's plenty of information online about how to configure them, if you need help.

What it really boils down to are two questions:

Do you need high security or is security not a concern?

Do you want to control the computer itself as if you were sitting at it, or do you want to be able to only upload/download files back and forth?

Remote desktop really isnt /that/ insecure.

You need a copy of xp pro to set up remote access though I think? Perhaps you could download a software package from MS.

If you are really sketched, set it up to use a nonstandard port.

If you router is relatively new, it should have a "dynamic DNS" option in it, otherwise you can configure one manually. go to dyndns.org (or .com or whatever), and set up a free account to get a domain name like <yourstupidname>.ath.cx or something from some random host in some random country. What the service does is binds that URL to an IP address that you give it, and put its up there on the internet DNS network or whatever, so that you can access your computer from anywhere in the world with a domain name. If your router is not set up to automatically update it, you will have to visit dyndns every time your IP changes (sucks for some people).

This is simply to avoid having to remember a long and changing IP address like 24.141.29.232. Thats ok too though, if you like numbers then skip that step.

Ok so now that that is done, you need to forward the port through your router. If you dont know how, then google it. You should probably look up the standard port (3690 or something) and get it to work first before you change it.

Then you have to dive into system properties to enable remote desktop requests. If you right click on 'my computer' and go to the 'remote tab', you can enable it. Sorry, Im not sure how to change the port, it may be more involved (JFGI)

In order to log onto your computer remotely, your account MUST have a password. Obviously, or else anyone could just fish for open desktops. Please make it secure .

Now, from another computer with XP (again, you probably need professional. Vista may work too), find the remote desktop application. Mine is "start > applications > communication > remote desktop". You will be asked for the name of a computer, so type your fancy URL (or IP address) into the box. If you are using a nonstandard port, attach ':####: to the end of the address to specify the port.

And thats it. My tests show that your host computer needs about 30 kb/s upstream bandwidth to browse comfortably. No video, but audio is ok, and click response is very good. Dont try to run torrents on the host. No games lol.

AWESOME FOR SLACKING OFF AT WORK

oh and if you just do this at home, then fuck all that DNS IP crap, and just type in the computer name like "my work PC", or the local ip (192.168.x.xxx)

For just transferring files, FTP would be cool, maybe a bit clunky. But remote desktop is sweet... Lol i just msn file transfer stuff to myself

If i help you plx rate me? Havent been shroomed in a while

cheers

He still hasn't answered the two questions that I've posed. So none of us really fully understand his needs yet.

1. Security Levels
2. File transfers or system control.

i have been doing alot of reading - this is truly something im unacquainted.

initially i just wanted to be able to use audio and video files on my lappy. but im now realizing that it could be useful to be able to have the ability to change files

but if this was the case im most def need some sort of security

There are programs you can install on your computer that enables you to stream music when you're on another computer, over the internet.

I think your best bet is a VPN with Remote Desktop to be honest.

There are lots of ways to accomplish this. The most secure and easiest are VPN devices (Lots of money), the next best and probably just as secure would be a GNU/Linux machine with OpenVPN on it. It must be configured properly to stay secure though.

OpenVPN might also has a Windows build. http://openvpn.net/

When you create your VPN adapter in your laptop be sure to uncheck "use remote gateway" or something to that note. I think you can also make your surfing traffic go through your VPN so it's encrypted by leaving it checked but you'll have to make all of the settings correct.

Just ask more if you need it bro. Take care.

That's overkill. VNC is encrypted. So instead of Remote Desktop over VPN, you could just use VNC over the internet.

But... I don't think that's what the OP wants. Simple file access is a lot easier than having full desktop control, and more useful.

if, i ran linux desktop would i have to use linux on my remote pc?

i would hate to switch my os choice , but might be worth it not having to wait for backing up an external and take it around everywhere
