Using a LCD HD TV as a computer monitor
    #9241350 - 11/13/08 11:03 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

I'm sure that most of you have noticed the trend of PC inputs being included on LCD flat-panel television sets so that one can use it as a computer monitor.

I bought a 19 inch LG LCD TV just for this purpose.  I am thoroughly disappointed in its performance.  The colors looks horrible on it.  Photos look shrill and unnatural.  Certain colors don't go together so that letters can blur and become unreadable.  I spent over $500 on the thing when I bought it and I would have been better just buying a real computer monitor for less.

So, here are my questions:  Is this normal?  Do all LCD TV's look like shit when used as a computer monitor?  Should I try a different brand of LCD TV or should I just get a normal computer monitor?

You probably just need to configure your video card right.

I'm using a 42 inch HD LCD right now... with my laptop... I'm watching a movie from mini nova and I'm posting on boards and working on my website

Everyone should invest in dual screens... just make sure you have a good video card so you can adjust your settings.

By the way... my website is www.Green-Revolutionary.com

It is a site to promote equality and environmentalism.... you should all come check it out and help me get some traffic... after all code and what not traffic is the hardest part.... oops off topic... yeah get LCD!!!!!!! get a video card with an HDMI jack!!

The drivers for the video card are correctly installed and functioning properly.  I should also note that my old computer monitor which was ancient worked great at displaying colors.

If it's 19", chances are it IS a normal computer monitor, with a tuner added on to it. What resolution are you running it in? It should be 1440x900. It's 16:10, not 16:9.

some LCD tv's don't support the larger resolution of their LCD monitor counterparts.

I would definately put it to the test and make your decision, cause as far as 19" goes, you can get a 19" LCD monitor for almost dirty cheap these days

4:3 and 16:9 are my only choices.  The resolution is just fine...it's just that the colors look goofy and nowhere near as nice as a regular computer monitor.  But, it is still useable.

Baahh....I will probably continue to use it for a while and then I'll buy a new computer that has an HDMI video out and get a decent LCD.

Hmm, if it's true 16:9 then it really is an LCD TV. The only other thing I can think of is the signal - are you using VGA or DVI? But VGA shouldn't be that bad. And I presume you've played around with the colour settings on the display itself? It's very common for TVs (not monitors) to be set on ultra-bright defaults so they look good in the shop, but they invariably need adjustment for real use.
