Im interested in starting with a liquid culture. Where do I get the large syringe and long tip to draw the liquid out? I have access to pet syringes but theyre to small I think. Also where do I get a cheap/good magnetic stirrer? How much liquid culture in each jar? Whats the best liquid culture tek?
Thanks In Advance.

Easy and cheap LC tek
Blank sterile syringes
Edit: for a stirrer you can just use a marble or piece of broken glass

I don't understand how Ralphster is charging $5 for 2 syringes, and then says "Yes it's true!" like it's some crazy deal, lol. MadSeason has 5 for less than that - and 100 for $25 @ 25 cents each, which is what they really cost.

Yea, Don't buy them from the mycology supply places. If you just need one or two, you can try asking your doctor- minewas willing. I needed syringes+needles long before I started mycology and the doc was like ok.(Solvent welding was what I initially needed them for)
If they say no, or you need more look up medical supply places online. A few require a prescription, many others don't.
On a side note, requiring a prescription for syringes/needles is just stupid. There are plenty of legitimate reasons for them, AND it limits access to clean needles for drugies. [rant] all the drugs that you inject cost WAY more than a needle... why the #@()#$*#() not buy clean ones and make sure you don't get HIV/hep. b/ etc[/rant]

I'd buy them from KV Vet-> http://www.kvvet.com/KVVet/product_family.asp?family_id=211&gift=False&mscssid=D8F52CD7389B4BCA8B7F796E2998576E

I found most of the tek's on the LC's had one flaw. They assumed all the different karo/honeys had the same sugar content.
If you read the shroomery Liquid Culture Bascis you'll see that it says :
Quote:
Liquid cultures are normally at a 4% dilute solution of various sugars and other nutrients in water. This would be 4 grams of sugars per 96 ml/cc water. (Water weighs 1 gram per ml/cc.)
The different types of corn syrups available at my local store had drastically different amounts of sugar (some had 2-3x as others). So keep an eye on that.
As far as how much liquid culture you want, that's really up to you.. how much do YOU want to use? :-D

Honey is more or less constant in its sugar content.
also,
increasing the amount of water vs sugar helps prevent the formation of particulates during pressure cooking.

Karo LC is by far the easiest. Spend the extra 50 cents and buy the Karo brand corn syrup in your baking aisle.
Search is a very powerful feature on this website just keep that in mind . These questions have probably been answered a bunch of times. Also for supplies check the vendors or Google search. So search search search. The basic information is easily obtained, just need to put forth a little effort. As you get more experienced with searching you will search for more complicated question and thus a learning experience will occur

That's what I plan on using. I'm using quart jars, how much water and Karo should I put in each jar? Also, when the LC is low, can I squirt the last into a new jar of water and Karo and keep it going? Is this safer than grain to grain? How many days does it take for the LC to be ready to use?
Thanks Again.
