Will hickory chips work instead of alder?
    #9230741 - 11/12/08 01:48 PM (15 years, 5 months ago)

I dug up some pins, & replanted them, but I could not find any alder chips, or anything other than hickory woodchips for the barbecue. They are perfect size, hard to break, & the same color as alder chips. Will these work?

Any hardwood will work.  In a few days you should be able to see how much the mycelium likes it.

Yes, its really cheap, about $5 for 50 lbs at almost any hardware store.

No, in my experience it only colonizes sometimes and kind of sucks.

I would recommend a real hardwood over doug fir chips.

Some people have gotten nature scapes to work great, those people boiled the chips. I am not sure if that changes anything or not.  They are found in the wild on this stuff, one theory is that it becomes a better substrate for Psilocybes after it has bleached in the sun for a few years.

bamboo is not a hardwood. In fact, it isn't a tree at all. It's a grass species!

well if you dont have a chipper or access to a bunch of chips for cheap, its more than easy to go to walmart or lowes or home depot or something, and spend 5-10$ on a bag that will last you a season or two, and works right out of the bag with grain spawn.

but yeah, stamets says its best to collect alder branches in the spring, and chip them up to weather for the upcoming season.

ipe with a bamboo backer and you could go maybe 30-35 yards:2cents:
+ im glad to hear that hickory will work.
1 ? tho, does it need to be soaked alone or should you leach some of the tannins out of the chips?
just in case, leaching meaning multiple soak and repeats.

I have planted P. Cyanescenes in the hickory woodchips. The Mycellium will begin attaching that quickly? Surely, nothing will grow on these woodchips until next season, right? The pins are growing perfectly well out of the soil they were dug up with, but it won't be until next season that they would grow from the newly laid-down woodchips?

This patch has been moved into the woods, so the soil is full of nutrients. I figured all hardwoods would work, glad to be somewhat more certain.
