hunting mimosa hostilis
    #9204026 - 11/07/08 07:03 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

funny, there's another mimosa thread I hate doing that.. anyway.

I was driving home from work today and noticed a tree that i thought had leaves that looked just like mimosa hostilis,
as i look down at its trunk (its about 2-3 feet across) i notice a large chunk of bark falling off and on the inside of it, it was really pink, a little lighter then what i see from store bought mhrb. it also had seed pods hanging down everywhere. i plucked a few mature seed pods and opened them up the seeds look just like this.

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/60269/ they have an extremely hard shell and the pods where all hanging down vertically.

is there anyway for me to identify a this tree? I didn't have a camera so none of thoose pictures are of what i found, just the closest look alikes i can find on google.

what other info can i gather about the tree to figure it out?

Theres no sense on hunting Mimosa hostilis if you don´t live where it´s native which sounds like it´s your case.
So, if you don´t live in the brazilian north east, just forget about it, sorry.

Could be a plant in the same family, if that is the picture of the plant you saw. I have a few, but they are in pots and finding them except from a grower would be impossible.

a lot of mimosa and acacia have the same leaf structure/pattern.

keep in mind, most acacia and mimosa are also active;)

Not true that most acacia/mimosas are active. There are lots of active acacias but there´s only a few active species of Mimosa.

You' probably need pictures of the flowers to be sure about the hostilis. There are some close lookalikes.
