Poo Tek For a New Grower?
    #919263 - 09/30/02 10:53 AM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Well I have been reading everything I can on these forums for months now and have finally decided to start growing. I feel like I have researched alot and am ver interested in the poo tek. I have 12 pre-sterelized pint jars comming on Thur. and have 3 spore syringes. I was going to inoc the jars and then make a verm casing, but i think the poo tek might be better. Would the risks of contam be much greater? I dont have a PC but I have read that a microwave will do the job. do you think i should go with the poo or the verm casing?

Thanks,
Jacc1234

The poo tek is a bulk substrate tek that can be cased with your favorite casing material. Verm casing could be used with the poo tek. There is a difference. The poo tek would result in much higher yields since there is much more nutritious substrate. Verm casing your original jars would produce better flushes than growing off the cakes. But 50/50+ casing is much better than plain verm casing.

I had always thought that the casing layer only provided a place for mycellium to grow and did not provide any nutritious benefits...?

poo is a substrate.....not a casing layer.

yes casing layers are usually non nutritious.

if you are fruiting off poo with no casing layer this would be a nutritious substrate and wouldn't even be called a casing.

Absolutely right. But the poo tek is really not a casing tek, it is a bulk substrate tek. I said you'll get bigger yields, because you have more substrate. If you use your jars to innoculate more subtrate, then yes, you'll have a bigger yield, because you have more substrate. If you just case your jars (the original substrate) then you will have lower yields because your fuiting less substrate. Hope that clears it up.

Thanks for the info guys but I still have some questions. Would it be worth it for me to do the poo tek as a first time grower? There is a horse stable that is near by so I was just thinking of running over there and getting some poo. If i did the poo tek would the contam risk be much greater?

Thanks

If you're an impatient type of person you might want to not put all your cakes into poo because it does delay the time a bit whilst the cakes take over the poo.

Try making six small casings with one cake mixed with a half pint of pasturised manure each cased with strait vermiculite.fruit six jars as cakes, like just for an experiment

I agree, its never good to put all your eggs in one basket. I would definitely fruit some of your pf jars separate just in case.

If you are planning on scooping up your own hpoo there are extra things to conceder. The poo needs to be aged, weathered, and leeched. Also you will need to pasteurize it correctly in order to keep beneficial microbes alive.
