Poppy Question...

Alright, I have been doing a lot of research about this topic, but I just have a few questions.
The other day, this friend of a friend brought back a few poppy pods. Now, I dont really know much about poppies, and the pods look identical to the opium pods which I've looked up on the internet. The seeds, look similiar too. They look like little navy beans with a porus surface. (Except extremely small).
Now Since I live in an area where the Orange California poppies are present, could this be just a normal CA poppy? Do CA poppies produce the same looking pods as an opium poppy?
I just planted them tonight, so Ill post pix when they sprout I think the leafs are completely different from one to the other kinds of species.
Oh, and basically, if you plant them in the fall, they wont flower until spring?

If u wanna know if how opium poppies look like, and how non-opium lookalike poppies look, check http://www.darktruth.net/opium/opium.htm Some pics there etc..
And yes u can go buy opium poppy seeds in yer grocery in spice rack. Opium seeds contains small traces of codeine and morphine. I happen to buy 200grams bags of opium poppy seeds in my grocery, then I go home and make some tea of them. Let them steep in 2-3 cups of hot water (NOT boiling) with some half bottle of lemon juice added for 30 minutes while stirring alot, strain and drink. You might try to do a double extraction, by first letting them stay in just warm water from yer sink, then save that liquid and do a boil on the seeds to get more out and mix the 2 liquids and drink. I know my explanations sux at the moment but I just had some.

Bah, Im still confused....
I went to the plant store today and I saw some Papaver seeds. They were not called Papaver somniferum, but they were rather called Papaver and then a word I cant remember.
So it has to be the actual Papaver somiferum to containe any opium properties or do any Papaver species contain opium...(of course after grown)

There are a few names for poppies that contain opiates. When the seeds are sold for growing, they are usually sold under a different name than pap. somniferum. Often the are called the breadseed poppy. Look at the picture, if the pods are large, it is most likely an opium poppy, it could also be an Oriental Poppy (Papaver Orientales(?))

Yeah, there was like 4 different Papaver seeds and 3 CA poppies.
The Papaver spp all had the big pods, and flowers that looked like the opium poppies that I have seen before in pictures.
I just am still amazed/confused that they sell poppy seeds, MEANT for growing. I thought growing them were illegal!!!
So basically if they are a papaver spp, they will contain opium!! Ok , thanks.
The dried (like coconut hardness) pod that my friend's friend found looked exactly the same as the pics which I have seen and stuff. I hope it works

You do not want to use P. somniferum from the store because u want to use ones specifically grown opium content, pod size, number of seeds, and whatever u see fit. the ones at the store are grown for seed content and flavor.
Im not saying they wont work, but u can have soooo much better.

yes, but only because it is a protected plant...not because it contains opiates. they sell cali pop extracts at many online herbshops, if you're truely interested. papaver somniforum is the only poppy, to my knowledge, that is illegal to harvest alkaloids from. also, the california poppy (escholtzia californica) isn't even a true poppy (though many believe this to be the case) and is not considered to be anything special. in fact, one of the only things it contains that pap.somni. contains is protopine. protopine isn't anything special and isn't even a phenanthrene. stick with somni's.

what are you speaking of? cali pops never had morphine or other phenanthrenes....nor did bread poppy (if so, in trace amounts...not nearly enough to waste time over). which papaver are you speaking of?
