Pan. Cyanescens
    #916946 - 09/29/02 02:16 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Has anyone had any luck casing P. Cyanescens with 50/50? It would be a lot easier if I could use what I already have instead of going out to look for compost/dung. I do know someone who owns a horse though, could I use hay and cow ploop?

Yes, you may use cow manure and hay. It is also possible to fruit Pan. cyans using straight colonized grains. Either way you go about it, I think that a casing layer would be useful to provide more moisture and to act as a non-nutritive contamination barrier.

I've never used straight 50/50. Try 50/50+ for better results. The lime helps to inhibit contaminants.

I thought the plus was crushed oyster shells, or can it mean both? Where can I find crushed oyster shells and lime? By lime do you mean normal everyday lime?
Are you saying you HAVE used 50/50+ with good results for pans?

I am currently pinning a tray of pans that has a 50/50+ casing. I predict everything will work out quite well based on prior experience. I had a tray of colonized horse dung that began pinning on its own. The resultant fruit was very small and I was disappointed with the results. I cleaned off the tray, removed all pins, and then cased it with 50/50+ too. I believe that tray will perform well.

Oyster shells will work well, but I have no experience using them. Most people have good luck finding oyster shells at feed stores. Concerning lime, try hydrated lime. Read the label and make sure it has no magnesium.

Try the gardening section of a store or a nursery.

If it's a cultivation question, it could be asked here.  Not only will you get more responses, you stand a good chance of getting better responses than I would provide.  Also, you have no idea how many cultivation related PMs I get...

Copelandia Cyanescens fruit extremely porrly without a casing layer if at all. I am surprised they pinned without a casing layer, but anything is possible.
The best casing for pans is 50/50 with shellgrit and lime. Coir works ok, but they tend to overlay (hard to believe that copes can do that, but they do).
The most important issue is that pans require more fanning and 20C+ to fruit properly and fruit poorly on composted manure. Go and pick your own shit

As stated, the results were very poor. I noticed the knotting and pinning and decided to let it go. After realizing that the results were going south, I cleaned up the surface and cased it with 50/50+. It is currently incubating.
